Malawi's national airline, Air Malawi, ceased operations. The airline, which was placed under voluntary liquidation since November 2013, did obviously not find a strategic partner for co-investments into its operations. Air Malawi's main base was Chileka International Airport in Blantyre.

Malawi: Air Malawi placed under voluntary liquidation
The government of Malawi has placed the state-owned national carrier of the country, Air Malawi, under voluntary liquidation. It has created a new company, Air Malawi (2012) Ltd. which is currently searching for a strategic partner for co-investment into its operations. The government has decided to continue Air Malawi's operations until a such a partner has been identified to take over 49% of the airline's shares.
Air Malawi is a regional carrier in southern and eastern Africa. The airline's main base is Chileka International Airport, Blantyre, with a hub at Lilongwe International Airport in Lilongwe.

Air Malawi resumed flights between Blantyre <> Johannesburg
Malawi's flag carrier Air Malawi has finally resumed flights between Blantyre <> Johannesburg. The airline was forced to stop operating the route in November 2011 (see blogpost from 14 Nov 2011).
Air Malawi is servicing the route between Blantyre <> Johannesburg four times a week on Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays operating a Boeing 737-200.
According to Air Malawi's marketing executive Phillip Malanga, the airline is planning to increase flights between the two destiantions gradually.

Air Malawi to resume flights between Blantyre <> Johannesburg
Malawi's flag carrier Air Malawi will resume its flights between Blantyre <> Johannesburg on 18 March 2012. The airline stopped operating on the route in November 2011 because of various reasons (see blogpost from 14 Nov 2011).
Air Malawi has leased a Boeing 737-500 aircraft from South Africa for use on the route, which will initially be serviced four times a week on on Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. The airline plans to to increase flights between Blantyre <> Johannesburg gradually.

Air Malawi forced to cancel Johannesburg flights
update (28 Nov 2011): Air Malawi returned to the air on Thursday (24 Nov 2011) after being grounded for
eight days. The airline's ATR 42-320 is back in service while the Boeings are still grounded!
update (16 Nov 2011): Malawi's "The Daily Times" is reporting that Air Malawi had to suspend all flights to Johannesburg because the lease agreement on the aircraft (Boeing 737-300) the airline has been using recently for those flights is expired. It is estimated (according to the airline) that these flights will resume on 01 December 2011, although Air Malawi is "currently" in the process of sourcing a better, reliable and efficient aircraft. Good luck then...
The newspaper is also reporting that "the airline also says its other aircraft, ATR 42, which has been undergoing maintenance, is expected to be back in service on Monday November 21." Is the whole airline grounded? According to my info, Air Malawi's aircraft fleet used to consist of three planes - a Boeing 737-300, a Boeing 737-500 and a ATR 42-320.
Due to a lack of equipment, Malawi's flag carrier, Air Malawi, had to suspend all Boeing B737 operated flights between Blantyre and Johannesburg. The last flight to operate between Johannesburg and Blantyre will be today (14 Nov 2011).
In a statement the airline said that the suspension will be until further notice when replacement equipment is available. If you are booked on the route, please contact Air Malawi and/or the ticketing service you booked the flight with. We'll keep you posted.

Lake Niassa has been officially declared a reserve by the Government of Mozambique
Lake Niassa (or Lake Malawi), located between Malawi, Mozambique and Tanzania, has been officially declared a reserve by the Government of Mozambique, protecting the species and natural habitats of one of the largest and the most bio-diverse, freshwater lakes in the world.
The Government of Mozambique has also approved the proposal for the designation of Lake Niassa as a Ramsar site, including not only the reserve, but surrounding wetlands and watershed. This wetland will be the second Ramsar site for Mozambique after the declaration of Marromeu Complex in 2003.

The Ramsar Convention is an international treaty for the conservation and sustainable utilisation of wetlands. Ramsar Sites are wetlands of a certain international importance. The sites are selected by the member states for designation under the Convention by reference to the Criteria for Identifying Wetlands of International Importance.

Air Malawi to resume flights on 15 May 2011
Due to technical reasons Air Malawi will not be operating for the next four days starting 11 May 2011. Passengers already ticketed will be accommodated on South African Airways flights at the airport.

Air Malawi: heavy disruptions on the airline’s flight schedule
Air Malawi's Boeing 737-200 is currently been taken out of service due to unscheduled maintenance and will only return to service on 30 Jan 2011. Therefore all domestic flights between Blantyre and Lilongwe have been cancelled. All passengers on flights to Johannesburg, Lusaka, Harare, Dar-es-salaam and Nairobi are being re-routed on Kenya Airways and South African Airways.
