Rugby: South Africa to host next two World Rugby U20 Championships!

World Rugby and South African Rugby (SA Rugby) have confirmed that South Africa will host the next two editions of the World Rugby U20 Championship, in 2023 and 2024, while Kenya is set to host the U20 Trophy in 2023.
The World Rugby U20 Championship 2023 will take place from 24 Jun 2023 to 14 July 2023 and will be played over five match days in Stellenbosch, Paarl and Wellington, with the world’s best 12 U20 teams staying in Cape Town. The participating teams are: France, Wales, New Zealand, Japan (Pool A), Australia, England, Ireland, Fiji (Pool B), South Africa, Argentina, Italy and Georgia (Pool C).

Pool matches:

• Match day 1: Saturday 24 June 2023
• Match day 2: Thursday 29 June 2023
• Match day 3: Tuesday 4 July 2023

Knock-out matches:

• Match day 4: Sunday 9 July 2023
• Match day 5 (final): Friday 14 July 2023

The U20 Trophy, which will be contested by eight teams, will be hosted at the Nyayo National Stadium in Nairobi, Kenya, from 15 July 2023 to 30 July 2023. The participating teams are: Scotland (relegated from the U20 Championship in 2019), Kenya (hosts), Hong Kong (Asia), Samoa (Oceania), Spain (Europe), Uruguay (South America) and two teams still to qualify through regional competition from North America and Africa.

Wellington: The brand home and tasting facility of the James Sedgwick Distillery is receiving a complete face-lift! [update #2]

update (11 January 2023): The  James Sedgwick Distillery in Wellington in South Africa's Western Cape has announced that its brand home and tasting facility will be open again from 01 February 2023!

update (14 November 2022): According to a posting by the distillery on Facebook, the project is running behind schedule due to issues out of the teams control, but the target to re-open its brand home and tasting facility is still before the end of this month (November 2022)!

The only commercial whisky distillery in Africa, the James Sedgwick Distillery in Wellington in South Africa's Western Cape, has announced that its brand home and tasting facility is receiving a complete face-lift and will therefore be closed until further notice.
The James Sedgwick Distillery was established in 1886 in Wellington. With more that 150 000 casks of whisky in maturation at any given time, the Distillery handels the entire whisky making process - from milling the raw ingredients through to maturation and blening. Under the brand "Three Ships", it produces both malt and grain whiskies on the same site, which is unusual for whisky distilleries. The "Three Ships" range includes blended and single malt whiskies.

South Africa: Africa's only commercial whisky distillery now offers tours and tastings!

Africa's only commercial whisky distillery, the James Sedgwick Distellery in Wellington, now offers tours and tastings on Fridays and Saturdays at 10:00 and again at 14:00. Tours are limited to 10 people at a time. Visitors are invited to explore the art of whisky-making and to learn about the rich history of the distillery spanning 130 years. The tour includes:

• a whisky-cocktail on arrival
• an informative video as an introduction to the James Sedgwick Distellery
• an on-foot guided tour around the distillery to witness first-hand how the whiskies are crafted through the various stages from raw material to distillation to maturation
• the tasting of three whiskies with five sample dishes at the tasting room

No bookings can be made at the James Sedgwick Distellery or on arrival. Bookings can only be made online. The cost is currently R350 per person. All tours and tastings are for over 18's only.

Did you know... the Route 62 in South Africa is the longest wine route in the World

The famous Route 62, stretching from Cape Town via Oudtshoorn and the Garden Route to Port Elizabeth, is said to be the longest wine route in the World. It spans a distance of about 850km. The route, named after the R62 regional route, leads through the wine-growing areas of Wellington, Tulbagh, Worcester, Robertson and the Klein (Little) Karoo. The Route 62 is a mountainous, shorter and more scenic alternative to the N2 highway with  easily accessible towns, nestled along the valleys.

One of the most famous attractions along the Route 62, besides the wine, the landscape and picturesque towns, is "Ronnie's Sex Shop" in Barrydale. The "shop" is actually a pub that was painted with the name one night as a prank by Ronnie’s friends. Other attractions along the route are, of course, wine tours, but also safari drives, hiking tours, 4x4 routes, cultural excursions, horse & ostrich riding a number of adrenaline tours, such as skydiving, canoeing, caving and much more.
