Table Mountain Cableway Maintenance Schedule: What travellers need to know

The Table Mountain Aerial Cableway Company (TMACC) has announced that the Table Mountain Cableway in Cape Town, South Africa, will be temporarily closed for scheduled annual maintenance from Monday, 27 July 2026, until Sunday, 09 August 2026. 

According to the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway Company (TMACC), the popular attraction is expected to reopen — weather permitting — on Monday, 10 August 2026.

The annual shutdown is an important part of maintaining the safety and reliability of one of Cape Town's most visited attractions. During this period, all cable car operations will be suspended while technical inspections, upgrades and maintenance work are carried out.

Hiking Table Mountain During the Closure

Although the cableway will not operate during the maintenance period, hikers and climbers will still be able to access Table Mountain National Park via the various hiking trails.

Travellers planning to hike are encouraged to prepare carefully, monitor weather forecasts and ensure they have enough water, suitable footwear and warm clothing. Winter weather in Cape Town can change rapidly, with strong winds, rain and low cloud frequently affecting the mountain.

Popular hiking routes such as Platteklip Gorge, Skeleton Gorge and India Venster are expected to remain accessible, subject to weather and park safety conditions.

Important Information for Birthday Ticket Visitors

South Africans who qualify for the popular free birthday Cableway ticket offer will still be able to redeem their complimentary ride during their birthday month, outside of the annual maintenance closure dates.

Travellers visiting Cape Town during late July and early August 2026 are advised to plan alternative activities on days when the Cableway is closed, including exploring the city’s beaches, wine estates, scenic drives and other attractions.

Table Mountain Cableway in Cape Town to close for annual maintenance!

The Table Mountain Aerial Cableway Company (TMACC) has announced that the Table Mountain Cableway in Cape Town, South Africa, will be temporarily closed for scheduled annual maintenance from Monday, 28 July 2025, until Sunday, 03 August 2025. The popular Cape Town attraction is expected to reopen, weather permitting, on Monday, 04 August 2025.
During the maintenance shutdown, all cable car operations will be suspended, and both the Upper and Lower Cableway Stations will be inaccessible to the public. This annual closure is part of TMACC’s commitment to safety, reliability, and world-class service standards. Each year, the cableway undergoes comprehensive inspections and essential upgrades to ensure it continues to meet the highest international safety regulations.
While the cable cars will not operate during this period, hiking up Table Mountain remains permitted at hikers’ own risk. However, please note that all visitor facilities - including VIEWS by De Grendel, TEN67 Eatery, KLOUD Bar, TAP Bar, The Shop at the Top, and the ablution facilities - will be closed for the duration of the maintenance.
If your birthday falls between 28 July 2025 and 03 August 2025, you can still claim your free birthday cableway ticket during the month of your birthday — excluding the maintenance period. To redeem your ticket, present a valid South African ID, driver’s licence, or birth certificate that includes your SA ID number at the ticket office.

Cape Town: Table Mountain Cableway is temporarily out of service following a fire! [update #2]

update (29 October 2024): The Table Mountain Aerial Cableway Company (TMACC) has announced that the Table Mountain Cableway will resume normal operations on 30 October 2024, weather dependent. All outlets, retail and food and beverage will be open. People who have bought tickets have a window period in which to use those tickets or they can request for a refund. Anyone who celebrated their birthday during October 2024 will be able to redeem their free birthday ticket during the month of November 2024.

update (26 October 2024): The Table Mountain Aerial Cableway Company (TMACC) has announced that all commercial activities at the Cableway will be closed to the public until the new week. We'll keep you posted!

Cape Town's Table Mountain Aerial Cableway Company (TMACC) has announced earlier today (25 October 2024)  that the Table Mountain Cableway will be temporarily out of service following a fire on 24 October 2024 that damaged the parking garage and administration building at the Lower Station. According to the City of Cape Town's Fire and Rescue Services a burning bank of lithium batteries caused the fire.
Structual engineers are set to arrive this morning at the Lower Station to investigate the damage caused by the fire. The flames did not reach the machinery that operates the cable cars. However, the cable car service will remain suspended until further notice while the engineers carry out their tests today. The TMACC hopes to provide an update on a possible reopening date as soon as possible. We'll keep you posted!

Cape Town: Table Mountain Cableway announces extended annual maintenance shutdown for 2024!

Cape Town's Table Mountain Aerial Cableway Company (TMACC) has announced that the Table Mountain Cableway will close for an extended annual maintenance shutdown this year. The closure for such an extended time is in line with the maintenance schedule, in accordance with international standards. Aside from refurbishing the outlets and refreshing the look and feel of both the Top and Lower Stations, extensive work will be done on the cable cars and the ropes. The Table Mountain Cableway will shut down from 15 July 2024 to 01 September 2024 and will re-open, weather permitting on 02 September 2024.
Visitors can still hike up Table Mountain at their own risk during maintenance shutdown, but cable cars and all facilities, including our restrooms, eateries and shops will not be open during this time.

Cape Town: The Table Mountain Aerial Cableway Company has changed operating times!

The Table Mountain Aerial Cableway Company (TMACC) has announced that the operating times for its cable car transportation system to the top of Table Mountain in Cape Town have changed ("summer hours"). Effective today (01 February 2023) and until 30 April 2023 the operting times - weather permitting - are as follows:

• First Car Up: 08:00
• Last Car Up: 18:30
• Last Car Down: 19:30

The Cafe, which opens with first car up and closes 30 minutes before last car down, now opens its doors at 08:00 and closes at 19:00. The Wi-Fi Lounge opens at 08:00 and closes at 19:30.
The operating times will be switching to "winter hours" on 01 May 2023.

Cape Town: The Table Mountain Aerial Cableway closes for annual maintenance! [update]

update (25 August 2022): Cape Town's Table Mountain Aerial Cableway Company (TMACC) has announced that the Cableway is officially re-opening this Sunday, 28 August 2022! It will be opening according to August operational times, which are:

• Trading time: 08:30-17:00
• Last Car Up at 16:00
• Last Car Down at 17:00

Cape Town's Table Mountain Aerial Cableway Company (TMACC) has announced the dates of the annual 2022 maintenance shutdown. The cableway up Table Mountain will be closed for maintenance of the Lower Cable Station, the Upper Cable Station and each of its cabins for five weeks from Monday, 25 July 2022 to Sunday, 28 August 2022. Visitors can still hike up Table Mountain during the maintenance shutdown. The new TAP Bar, located at the Lower Cable Station, will be open to the public during the closure.

Cape Town: The Table Mountain Cableway is set to reopen!

Cape Town's Table Mountain Aerial Cableway Company (TMACC) is set to resume operations on 01 September 2020. The cable car will be running from 08:00 until 15:00 seven days a week. Strict health and safety protocols have been put in place. Visitors are to please abide by TMACC's rules and regulations and wear a mask at all times. Sanitising stations are placed at the entrance and exits of the upper and lower cable car stations and are also provided inside the cable car. A maximum of 26 passengers (instead of the normal carrying capacity of 65 passengers) plus the cabin master is allowed per ride in the cable car to allow enough space for physical distancing. The floors of the cable car have been demarcated to provide for safe distancing. To ensure correct ventilation, the TMACC operates the cable car with the windows removed. The handrails of the cable car will be sanitised between each trip and a deep clean of the cable car will be conducted daily. TMACC's health and safety representatives are on site to test the temperature of any passengers showing symptoms of COVID-19. Should someone have a high temperature, their physical contact with staff and visitors will be contained. For those who celebrated their birthdays during the national lockdown, it is possible for visitors to claim their free ticket. Claims can be made up to two weeks after the re-opening to local visitors.

Coronavirus pandemic: Table Mountain Aerial Cableway in Cape Town temporarily suspends operations!

Cape Town's Table Mountain Aerial Cableway Company (TMACC) just announced that it will temporarily suspend services from today (18 March 2020) due to the coronavirus pandemic. The cableway will remain closed until after the Easter weekend 2020, or until greater clarity is given on the management and containment of this virus by the President of South Africa and international health bodies, such as the World Health Organisation (WHO). According to the TMACC, it is its duty as of one of Africa's leading attractions to act responsibly as a tourism operator under these extreme circumstances. 

The Table Mountain Aerial Cableway Company (TMACC) has put arrangements in place for visitors who have already purchased tickets, to use these tickets at a later date or to apply for a refund. For more information please contact the TMACC.
