Zimbabwe: Great Zimbabwe World Heritage Site rehabilitation project has been launched!

The Government of Zimbabwe and the Agence Française de Développement (French Development Agency/FDA) today (30 June 2022) launched a EUR-3-million project for the rehabilitation and development of the Great Zimbabwe World Heritage Site in Zimbabwe's Masvingo Province. The three-year project is getting implemented by the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) in collaboration with the National Museums and Monuments of Zimbabwe (NMMZ).

The Great Zimbabwe World Heritage Site is located in southeastern Zimbabwe, about 30 km southeast of Masvingo. Great Zimbabwe is the name for the stone remains of a medieval city. Construction on the city began in the 11th century and continued until it was abandoned in the 15th century. Great Zimbabwe, which covers an area of nearly 80 ha, was an important trading centre and was renowned from the Middle Ages onwards. The National Museums and Monuments of Zimbabwe (NMMZ), under the Ministry of Home Affairs, is the entity directly responsible for the management of the Great Zimbabwe World Heritage Site.

The Cabinet of Zimbabwe last week (09 November 2021) approved a memorandum on the co-operation project between the National Museums and Monuments of Zimbabwe (NMMZ) and the French Development Agency (FDA) on the improvements of infrastructure at the Great Zimbabwe World Heritage Site. According to news reports from May 2021, France, through the French Ambassador to Zimbabwe, Mr. Laurent Chevallier, has pledged to upgrade the facilities at the monument and to assist in the marketing of the Great Zimbabwe World Heritage Site.

Zimbabwe: Gonarezhou National Park reopens at the end of February 2021!

update (26 February 2021): Gonarezhou National Park will be open from 01 March 2021!

Gonarezhou National Park in south-eastern Zimbabwe is closed since 10 January 2021 and is set to reopen the end of February 2021. During the temporary closure, the National Park's infrastructure team addresses maintenance issues in the camps. The short closure of Gonarezhou National Park to tourism also allows the roads a rest over traditionally the wettest months of the year in Zimbabwe.
The camps in Gonarezhou National Park (Mananga Camps, Chinguli and Chilojo Bushcamp) all closed at the end of November 2020 as usual and are scheduled to reopen again at the start of April 2021.
Gonarezhou National Park is located in the South-East Lowveld in the Masvingo Province, south of Chimanimani along the border with Mozambique. It covers an area of just more than 5 000 km² and is home to 400 species of birds, 89 species of mammals, 61 species of small mammals and insectivores as weel as to 50 species of fish. Zimbabwe's second largest National Park after Hwange National Park forms part of the Great Limpopo Transfrontier Park, a peace park that links it with Kruger National Park in South Africa and Limpopo National Park in Mozambique.

Air Zimbabwe to resume flights to Masvingo and Chiredzi!

The national airline of Zimbabwe, Air Zimbabwe, will resume scheduled services between Harare International Airport (HRE) in Harare and Masvingo's Masvingo Airport (MVZ) via Buffalo Range Airport (BFO) in Chiredzi on 16 December 2014. The arline will operate two weekly flights - presumably on Tuesdays and Thursdays - on board a 52 seater Xian MA60 aircraft between the three destinations.
Air Zimbabwe earlier this year resumed flights to the northern resort town of Kariba as it part of plans to redevelop its domestic network.
