South Africa: Jeffrey's Bay to host the first "Jeffreys Bay Open Of Surfing" in July 2013

Good news for Jeffrey's Bay and the surfing community in South Africa. Billabong South Africa and the JBU Surf Club from Jeffrey's Bay have teamed up to organise the first "Jeffreys Bay Open Of Surfing". The surfing event will take place at Supertubes in Jeffrey's Bay from 09 - 13 July 2013 and will also anchor an extreme sports festival that will run in town and environs during a one week period. The "Jeffreys Bay Open Of Surfing" will be presented as a Specialty Surfing Event, with an entry field of 64 surfers. There will also be a limited entry girls division and possibly secondary divisions to run concurrently within the main surfing event

The tournament is sanctioned by Surfing South Africa, recognised by the South African Sports Confederation (SASCOC) as the governing body of the sport in South Africa.
The annual Billabong Pro surfing contest at Supertubes in Jeffrey's Bay, usually taking place in July, has recently been canceled for the first time in 25 years. [more]

Billabong drops annual "Billabong Pro Jeffreys Bay" surfing contest

The annual Billabong Pro surfing contest at Supertubes in South Africa's surfing Mecca, Jeffrey's Bay, has been canceled for the first time in 25 years. Billabong, the event's main sponsor, had to withdraw all its funding as the surf and skatewear brand is currently facing financial troubles. The Billabong Pro Jeffreys Bay event, which usually attracted some of the biggest names in international surfing, used to take place in Jeffrey's Bay every July. Due to the cancellation of the surfing event, the coastal town stands to lose an estimated 15 to 20 million rand in potential revenue. Last year Billabong Pro Jeffreys Bay was already downgraded from World Championship Tour status and to a 6-star rated World Qualifying Series event. The good news is, that, according to Billabong SA marketing manager Chad D’Arcy, there are very serious discussions taking place at international board level to ensure that big time surfing does return to Jeffrey's Bay, either in 2014 or in the year thereafter. Hopefully!

Jeffreys Bay - South Africa's surfing paradise

Jeffreys Bay, or just Jbay, is South Africa's surfing paradise. Not just because of its famous  "supertubes" surf spot, the annual Billabong Pro ASP World Tour surfing event during July, or the Billabong and Quicksilver outlet stores, but because of its overall surfing kinda atmosphere. Jbay is simply a super enjoyable little town on South Africa's Garden Route that has some awesome backpackers, great beaches and its very own lifestyle! Watch the short video below and you'll know what I mean. Kudos @ Guy Dvorak for the video!
