The Mariental Municipality in Namibia has announced that it has renamed 16th Street, one of the longest streets in the town of Mariental, after the late Katrina Hanse-Himarwa (22 January 1967 – 14 July 2024).
Katrina Hanse-Himarwa was born in Mariental. She was the first female Governor of the Hardap Region in Namibia and former Minister of Basic Education, Arts and Culture.
The town of Mariental is located in south-central Namibia on the B1 national road about 230 kilometres north of Keetmanshoop and 275 kilometres southeast of Windhoek. The town is the administrative capital of the Hardap Region. The Hardap Dam, the second largest reservoir in Namibia, is situated close to Mariental. The Hardap reservoir dams the Fish River and is home to numerous examples of wildlife of Namibia.
