CapeNature, the public institution with the responsibility for biodiversity conservation in South Africa's Western Cape, has extended the closure of the Lambert's Bay Bird Island Nature Reserve. The Nature Reserve, which is closed since early May 2022 for renovations will not re-open to the public on 30 November 2022, but in early December 2022. Unfortunately, no specific re-opening date has been published by CapeNature yet.
Lambert's Bay Bird Island Nature Reserve lies about 100 m off the shore of Lambert’s Bay on the Cape’s West Coast. The Bird Island, which is almost three hectares in size, is connected to the mainland via a breakwater. It is an important breeding and roosting site for seabirds, particularly Cape gannets and cormorants. Cape fur seals can also be seen sunning themselves on the island’s rocks.
