SANParks: Kruger National Park heavy rains update

South Africa's Kruger National Park experienced (unusually) heavy rains since the beginning of March 2014, which caused extensive flooding in the south of the Park, with some roads closed, camps inaccessible and bridges submerged. South African National Parks frequently issues updates on the current situation in Kruger. We'll keep you posted!

update (19 March 2014): Kruger National Park is (almost) back to normal after the heavy rains and floods experienced over the last two weeks. All facilities that had been closed are now operational, except the S64 road from Punda Maria to Thulamela in the north of the park, the Wolhuter Trails camp and the Boesman Trails camp.

South African National Parks (SANParks) has released an update on the heavy rains in the Kruger National Park as on 17 March 2014 at 12:00.

Latest update:
  • Balule, Bateleur, Shimuwini and Sirheni Camps have been reopened.
  • The opening of the S29, S32, S33, S36, S122, S125, S34, S35, S128 and S84 roads in the Marula Region.
  • Pafuri Picnic Spot is open.

  • The closure of the S52, S56, S63 and S64 to Thulamela roads in the Nxanatseni Region.
  • The Nxanatseni Region is currently experiencing heavy rain.

  • The weather predictions indicate mild rains for the coming few days, however, most rivers have subsided except the Olifants River which is still flowing a bit high

As a safety precaution it has been decided to close the following facilities:
  • Talamati Bush camp (closed until Monday, 17 March 2014)
  • Biyamiti Bush Camp (closed until Monday, 17 March 2014)
  • Wolhuter Trails Camp (closed until Monday, 24 March 2014)
  • Boesman Trails Camp (closed until Monday, 24 March 2014)
  • Olifants Trail Camp (closed until Monday, 24 March 2014)
  • Nyalaland Fly Camp (closed until Monday, 24 March 2014)
  • Balule Satellite Camp (closed until Monday, 17 March 2014)
  • Sirheni Bush Camp (closed until Monday, 17 March 2014)
  • Bateleur Bush Camp (closed until Monday, 17 March 2014)
  • Shimuwini Bush Camp (closed until Monday, 17 March 2014)
  • Berg-en-Dal fence temporarily erected.
Bird Hides:

  • H1-1 from Skukuza to Pretoriuskop open
  • S60 between Punda Maria and Pafuri is open

  • H1-2 between Skukuza and Tshokwane is open (Sand River low level bridge between Skukuza and Tshokwane is closed).

  • more heavy rain is expected from Wednesday, 12 March 2014.

  • Crocodile Bridge Gate is closed again due to the flooding of the bridge.

  • Tshokwane Picnic Site reopened on 9 March 2014 
  • H3 from Skukuza - Malelane is now open. The northern part of the park is accessible via H12, high water level bridge.
River Update:
  • Limpopo river water levels dropped
  • Letaba river water levels dropped 
  • Levuvhu river water levels dropped
Damages Affecting Camps/Picnic Sites:
  • Lower Sabie water pump - temporary water available. Guests to use water sparingly
  • Pretoriuskop water pump - temporary water available. Guests to use water sparingly
  • Nkuhlu water pump - temporary water available. Guests to use water sparingly
  • Croc Bridge Camp Water Pump - temporary water available. Guests to use water sparingly
  • Olifants Camp - temporary water available. Guests to use water sparingly
  • Skukuza Camp - temporary water available. Guests to use water sparingly
  • Talamati Camp - temporary water available. Guests to use water sparingly
