Zambia's only domestic scheduled airline, Proflight Zambia, has announced the introduction of its first international destination. From 04 June 2013 the airline will operate flights between Lusaka (Zambia) and Lilongwe in Malawi. We will keep you posted regarding the number of flights Proflight Zambia will be offering.
From its base in Lusaka Proflight Zambia currently flies to Livingstone, Mansa, Ndola, Kasama, Chipata, Mfuwe, Lower Zambezi and Solwezi.

South Africa: 292 rhinos killed by poachers so far in 2013
According to the latest statistics released by the Department of Environmental Affairs, South Africa
has lost 292 rhinos to illegal poaching since the beginning of
2013. Of the rhinos poached, 216 rhinos were killed in the Kruger National Park, 23 in North West, 20 in KwaZulu-Natal, 19 in Limpopo and 14 in
Mpumalanga.
A total of 94 people have been arrested since the beginning of the year for rhino poaching and related activities.

The Department of Environmental Affairs (DEA) is urging members of the public to report incidents of rhino poaching or any tip-offs to the anonymous tip-off lines 0800 205 005, 08600 10111 or Crime-Line on 32211.

South African Tourism: South Africa's nine provinces in one video (18 min)
South African Tourism has released new promotional videos: an 18-minute video about all nine provinces of South Africa, as well as single videos about the provinces, namely the Western Cape, the Eastern Cape, the Northern Cape, North West, Gauteng, Mpumalanga, Limpopo and KwaZulu Natal. I couldn't find the video about the Free State on youtube, though. We will add the video as soon as it appears on the video-sharing website and let you know!
Video: Skateboarding in Maputo, Mozambique
Our collection of skate videos from East/Southern Africa is growing: we just stumbled upon a video about skateboarders in Maputo in Mozambique. The video, named Cena Viva, o retrato do skate em Moçambique (Cena Vica, the reality of skateboarding in Mozambique), highlights how limited the options are and how difficult it acutally is to skate on a board in and through Maputo. The video features the dudes of Maputo Skate, an organisation of skaters from Mozambique, whom you can find on Facebook as well as on Twitter. South African Airways and Etihad Airways to codeshare
South Africa's national airline, South African Airways, and the flag carrier of the United Arab Emirates, Etihad Airways, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) allowing the two airlines to introduce a comprehensive range of codeshare and interline air services as well as explore synergy and efficiency opportunities.
South African Airways will initially codeshare on Etihad Airways flights between Johannesburg and Abu Dhabi, as well as on flights to 12 cities on Etihad Airways’ worldwide network that includes destinations in the Middle East and South America.
Etihad Airways will in return place its code (EY) on South African Airways flights from Johannesburg to Cape Town, Durban, East London and Port Elizabeth (South Africa), as well as to Livingstone, Lusaka, Ndola (Zambia), Harare, and Victoria Falls (Zimbabwe). Outside the African continent Etihad Airways will place its code on South African Airways flights to Sao Paulo.
Secondary phases of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) will explore code sharing to more cities, closer synergies and efficiencies in the key commercial areas of procurement, ground handling as well as training.

Kenya Airways to add fourth weekly flight between Nairobi & Maputo
Kenya's flag carrier, Kenya Airways, announced that it will add an extra flight between Nairobi and Maputo in Mozambique. The airline will then be operating four weekly flights on the route. Kenya Airways and LAM Mozambique also codeshare on two flights, so that a total of six weekly flights will soon connect Nairobi and Maputo.
Other destinations that Kenya Airways flies to in Southern Africa other than Maputo include Nampula (Mozambique), Luanda (Angola), Harare (Zimbabwe), Lilongwe (Malawi), Gaborone (Botswana), Johannesburg (South Africa) as well as Ndola and Lusaka in Zambia.

Malawi: Lake of Stars Project to celebrate 10th Anniversary by hosting "City of Stars" festival in Lilongwe

In 2012 Malawi missed out on the "Lake of Stars" festival, usually taking place on the shores of Lake Malawi, as the organisers spent time developing new ways to enhance and promote the music, culture and tourism of Malawi, based on their experience and that of local practitioners. There will also be no "Lake of Stars" festival in 2013, but the organisers of the festival have announced that the Lake of Stars Project will celebrate its 10 Year Anniversary by hosting a brand new city-based festival and arts conference in Lilongwe, Malawi from 27 to 28 September 2013. Tickets for the "City of Stars" festival will be on sale in July 2013, with the first acts being confirmed as "The Very Best" (Lilongwe & London), "George the Poet" (London) and "Auntie Flo" (Glasgow).
