Victoria Falls: 2018/19 white water rafting season on the Zambezi is finally open!
The 2018/19 white water rafting season on the mighty Zambezi has been opened, so that high water rafting trips from Victoria Falls (Zimbabwe) and Livingstone (Zambia) are available again. Due to the water level of the Zambezi, rafting during the high water season begins 10 km downstream of the Victoria Falls at rapid number 11 and finishes at rapid number 23. The white water rafting below the Victoria Falls is commonly recognized as the best Grade 5 white water rafting in the World.

Victoria Falls: The high water rafting season 2017 has started!
The Zambezi River water levels are dropping so fast that rafting on the mighty river is possible again. After a super short high water closure (since 02 April 2017), high water rafting trips from Victoria Falls (Zimbabwe) and Livingstone (Zambia) are now running again from Rapid #15 to Rapid #24. Rafting on the Zambezi has been suspended for the season!
Rafting on the Zambezi has been suspended for the season in Victoria Falls (Zimbabwe) and Livingstone (Zambia) on 02 April 2017 due to rising water levels. According to the chairman of the Rafting Association of Zimbabwe (RAZ), Mr Skinner Ndlovu, water levels are currently rising fast (about 5cm/day) and have already exceeded the cut off point, which makes rafing on the Zambezi too dangerous.
Rafting on the Zambezi is depending on the water levels, which are completely dictated by rainfall. Due to delayed inflows of water, this year's water levels of the Zambezi started to rise late. As a result, the 2016/17 rafting season also ended late. It is therefore hard to tell when the water levels will drop again and the RAZ will reopen rafting on the Zambezi. In previous years, the season mostly ended in March and reopend in late May after water levels started dropping in April. We are keeping an eye on it and keep you posted!
btw - The last operating day of Livingstone Island will be 14 April 2017; the location will reopen when water levels of the Zambezi recede.

Zambezi: Low water season to start in a couple of days (Zimbabwe & Zambia)
We just learned that the low water season at the mighty Zambezi River in Victoria Falls (Zimbabwe) and Livingstone (Zambia) is expected to open on 24 or 25 July 2013. During low water season the rafting adventure begins just below the falls at rapid #1 and takes you on a 26 km journey over 19 rapids. The river is a pool drop river, which means you will have sections of relatively calm water in between the rapids; a great time to take in the scenery around you. The biggest rapids on the Zambezi River are officially defined as Grade 5 by the British Canoe Union.

Victoria Falls: Rafting season to open on 11 June 2011
update (03 July 2011): According to Livingstone Tourism, the Zambezi River is dropping... which means that rafting is getting better and BETTER! Running rapids 10-25 now!

Victoria Falls: End of rafting season 2010/11
update (02 March 2011):
The 2010/11 rafting season on the Zambezi at Victoria Falls has ended on 27 Feb 2011. Canoeing and raft floats will still take place on the upper part of the river. As usual this has been necessitated by the increasing water level which renders the rafting trip unsafe for commercial rafting. The commercial rafting comps in Victoria Falls (and Livingstone) are however expecting to resume rafting mid June 2011 depending on the water levels.

Victoria Falls: Rafting season 2010/11 closes early
Southern African tour operator Wild Horizons is reporting that, due to the dramatic rise of the Zambezi River, the last day of the White Water Rafting 2010/11 season was on 04 Feb 2011.
According to their calculations, rafting is likely to open by approximately 15 June 2011. The river is an amazing 29.5 cm higher this year than the same time last year!
update (23 Feb 2011): according to a post on the Lonely Planet Thorn Tree rafting was ony stopped (Zimbabwe) for a couple of days in early Feb due to bad road conditions. But - water levels are now getting to high and rafting is expecting to close within the next week. Rafting at this water level is not great and is a very short trip.
update (18 Feb 2011): depending on the water levels, Zambian rafting camps will probably be rafting on the Zambezi between rapids 14-25 for another week or so.
update (11 Feb 2011): I just asked Richard from Chanters Lodge in Livingstone (btw - great spot!!!) if the Livingstone rafting companies are still rafting on the Zambezi and he confirmed it. They are currently rafting between rapids 14-25!
update (09 Feb 2011): I am just getting the info that come comps on the Zambian side of the Falls are still rafting. But with waves as high as 10 metres at some rapids i would not encourage it... thx Joy!

Victoria Falls: Rafting on the mighty Zambezi
The Zambezi River is classified as a high volume, pool-drop river, i.e., there is little exposed rock either in the rapids or the pools below the rapids. The distance between rapids varies from 100 m to 2 km. The gorge itself is approximately 400 feet deep at the put-in point and 750 feet at the take out point and drops about 400 feet over the 24 km covered in the trip.
During low water, guests can do a full or half day trip. At the end of a full day or a half day trip, there is a lift out of the gorge.
The tour is inclusive of meals and drinks for the day.

White Water Rafting in Swaziland
White-water rafting was introduced to Swaziland in 1991 and is renowned as the best white-water in Southern Africa, south of the Zambesi. Operated by Swazi Trails the standard format is a half or full day guided river trip. The Great Usutu River offers a variety of Grade II to Grade IV white-water rapids. Trips are undertaken in 2-man, inflatable "croc" rafts and guided by local river guides in kayaks. Rafting in various formats is available 365 days a year. Departures are guaranteed for a minimum of two persons.
The Great Usutu is Swaziland's largest river. It flows from the South African highveld through central Swaziland and exits the Kingdom near Big Bend. Thereafter it winds past Nduma in KwaZulu-Natal and up to the Bay of Maputo in Mozambique. The Swazi Trails rafting stretch runs from a location between the villages of Sidvokodvo and Siphofaneni, which is known as the Bulungapoort. Although the river changes dramatically from full to low water levels, there is always a selection of Grade 2 to 4 rapids to be attempted. At certain medium and high water levels some stretches become Grade 5 in difficulty, with optional or compulsory portages at the river guide's discretion.
The river is wide and at lower water levels it winds its way between numerous islands and sandbanks, which are otherwise covered during the full water season. The location is scenic with tall mountains and forested riverbanks, interspersed occasionally by rural Swazi homesteads.

Pickup info: Trips depart Swazi Trails office between 08h30 and 09h00 daily. Swazi Trails are situated within the Mantenga Craft Centre in the Ezulwini Valley. There is safe parking for vehicles. A hotel or lodge pick-up in the Ezulwini, Mbabane and Manzini areas can be arranged at an additional charge. Free pick-ups are often provided when logistically possible, especially for larger groups or for participants accommodated in the direction of the tour departure. If unsure just ask as a special request when booking.
