Tanzania: Power cuts on Zanzibar
Due to technical faults, the island of Zanzibar is currently facing electricity rationing. The rationing started already on 25 Sept 2013 and will continue through to 18 October 2013. The reason for the power cuts are problems with the new 100 MW power cable link with the mainland, which was installed earlier in 2013. According to the Zanzibar Electricity Corporation (ZECO), it had to switch back to the old 40 MW cable to repair the new power supply. The old cable is now causing the rationing of power on Zanzibar. Randburg & surrounding areas to be without power on Sunday
South Africa's timeslive.co.za is reporting that Randburg surrounding areas in Gauteng will be without power on Sunday, 19 September 2010, between 5AM and 7PM.
The affected areas are:
Blairgowrie, Boskop, Boskruin, Bromhof, Darrenwood, Ferndale, Fontuinbleau, Kalland, Klipfontein, Malanshof, Moret, President Ridge, Randpark Ridge, Randview, Robin Acres, Robin Hills, Robindale, Ruitershof, Strydom Park, Windsor, Windsor Hill, Windsor Ridge.
To all the travellers out there - make sure that you are not staying in one of the areas without power on Sunday or doublecheck with the backpackers/hostel/hotel/B&B if they are having a generator or so to provide electricity.

Zanzibar: power on the island only back around end of February?
UPDATE (08 Mar 2010): Electricity is back in Zanzibar! (thx to quango (LP Thorn Tree))
The island of Zanzibar is without power since 10 Dec 2009 due to a breakdown affecting the 30-year-old undersea cable providing electricity from the Tanzanian mainland. Now the acting Energy Minister of Zanzibar told the media in a press conference that the power outage will last for a minimum of another 6 weeks (20 Feb 2010). He assured that the government of the semi-autonomous island is working 24/7 on the problem.
The opposition party (elections on Zanzibar are scheduled for later this year) is planning a mass protest in Stone Town for Sunday (17 Jan 2010).
