If you're planning to visit one of Eswatini's renowned wildlife reserves this year, there's an important change to be aware of before you set off.
Big Game Parks, which manages several of Eswatini's best-known protected areas and safari lodges, introduced a new Zero Cash Policy on 01 July 2026. Cash is no longer accepted at its parks, lodges and visitor facilities.
The change affects virtually every point where visitors would normally spend money, so arriving prepared will make your trip much smoother.
Where the cash-free policy applies
Cash is no longer accepted at any Big Game Parks-operated facilities, including:
- Park entrance gates
- Reception desks
- Restaurants
- Curio and gift shops
- Activity booking offices
Instead, guests should pay using one of the accepted electronic payment methods, including:
- Visa
- Mastercard
- MTN MoMo
- Other contactless payment options
Which parks and lodges are affected?
The policy applies across all Big Game Parks operations, including:
- Hlane Royal National Park
- Mlilwane Game Sanctuary
- Mkhaya Game Reserve
- KaMsholo Bushveld Safaris
- Reilly's Rock Hilltop Lodge
- Sondzela Backpackers
- Chubeka Trails
Whether you're booking a game drive, paying conservation fees, buying souvenirs or enjoying a meal after a morning safari, you'll need a suitable electronic payment method.
What this means for travellers
For most international visitors, the change is unlikely to cause major disruption, as bank cards and contactless payments are already widely used for travel. However, it's worth checking before departure that:
- Your credit or debit card is enabled for international transactions.
- You have informed your bank if required.
- Your mobile payment option is set up if you intend to use one.
- Any outstanding accommodation or activity costs are prepaid where possible.
Big Game Parks is also encouraging guests to prepay bookings before arrival. During your stay, some services may simply be charged to your accommodation account, with guests signing for purchases before settling the consolidated bill.

According to Big Game Parks, the cash-free system is designed to improve payment efficiency while enhancing security for both visitors and staff. It also reduces the need to handle cash across remote conservation areas and simplifies financial administration throughout the parks.

If Eswatini is on your Southern African travel itinerary, simply remember one thing: don't rely on cash when visiting Big Game Parks.
Bringing a working bank card or another accepted electronic payment method will ensure you can pay entrance fees, book activities, enjoy meals and shop without any unexpected surprises—allowing you to focus on what really matters: experiencing some of Southern Africa's most rewarding wildlife encounters.
