Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park: Roof upgrades scheduled at Kalahari Tented Camp! [update]

update (16 July 2025): The upgrade of the roofs of Kalahari Tented Camp has been completed. 

South African National Parks (SANParks) has announced that the Kalahari Tented Camp, located in the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, will undergo roof upgrades from 11 June to 30 July 2025.
According to park management, existing bookings will not be affected, and guests can look forward to uninterrupted stays while improvements are carried out.
The Kalahari Tented Camp is situated approximately 3 km from the Mata-Mata Rest Camp and offers a unique wilderness experience with 15 desert-style safari tents. Designed to blend with the stark beauty of the Kalahari Desert, the camp provides a sense of remote solitude - perfect for nature lovers seeking an immersive experience.
Guests staying at Kalahari Tented Camp can refuel vehicles and purchase basic supplies at the Mata-Mata shop. Although a 4x4 vehicle is not mandatory, a high-clearance vehicle is strongly recommended due to the rugged terrain within Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park. All check-in and check-out procedures are handled at the Mata-Mata Rest Camp.

Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park: Upgrading of the Kalahari Tented Camp commences! [update]

update (15 November 2024): The management of Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park of has announced that the maintenance of the roofs at Kalahari Tented Camp has been completed!

The South African National Parks (SANParks) management of Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park has announced it is in the process of upgrading the roofs of the units at Kalahari Tented Camp. The upgrading  commences today (21 October 2024) and is expected to be completed by 15 December 2024.
The Kalahari Tented Camp is located about three km from the Mata-Mata Rest Camp where Kalahari Tented Camp residents can refuel and get basic supplies at the shop. The camp, which boasts 15 desert tents, is designed in such a way that residents feel they have only themselves and the desert for company. The Kalahari Tented Camp is accessible by 4x4 vehicles, though a high-clearance vehicle is recommended due to the rugged roads within the park. Check-in and check-out processes are done through the Mata-Mata Rest Camp.

Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park: Maintenance work taking place in two camps!

South African National Parks (SANParks) has announced that Mata Mata Rest Camp and Kalahari Tented Camp in the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park are undergoing much needed maintenance. Work conducted today (15 September 2023) and is expected to continue approximately for 3x months. According to Regional Communications Manager: Arid Parks at South African National Parks (SANParks), Genevieve Maasdorp, work will include, amongst others, the painting of all the roofs of the accommodation, replacement of the walkways woods where needed and the maintenance of all the furniture. We'll keep you posted!

The Mata Mata Rest Camp is situated on the banks of the Auob River on the western boundary of  Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park and borders Namibia. The Kalahari Tented Camp is approx. 3 km from the Mata Mata Rest Camp. Situated high up on a red sand dune, it is overlooking a waterhole in the dry bed of the ancient Auob River.

Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park: Swimming pool at the Kalahari Tented Camp temporarily closed!

The swimming pool at the Kalahari Tented Camp in the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park in South Africa is currently undergoing necessary maintenance and is therefore not available for use to guests at least until 30 September 2018. The Kalahari Tented Camp is located conveniently close to the Mata-Mata Rest Camp (about 3 km) and the border post with Namibia (Welverdiend/Mata-Mata). The unfenced camp site is situated high up on a red sand dune, overlooking a waterhole in the dry bed of the ancient Auob River. It boasts 15 desert tents (1 luxury honeymoon tent; 4 familiy tents and 10 two-bed tents).
