Kruger National Park's Balule Satellite Camp Reopens after flood repairs

South African National Parks (SANParks) has announced that Balule Satellite Camp in Kruger National Park is open for bookings again, after months of repair work following severe flood damage earlier in 2026.

What happened to Balule?

In mid-January 2026, a slow-moving weather system brought record rainfall to Kruger National Park, causing widespread flooding across large parts of the park. The damage extended to Balule, affecting access roads, the camp's main entrance bridge, and sections of its low perimeter fence. SANParks closed the bush camp while repairs were carried out, and the camp remained off the booking system for several months. Reservations have now reopened, giving travellers access once again to one of Kruger's most low-key, back-to-basics camps.

About Balule

Balule Satellite Camp sits just south of Olifants Rest Camp, on the banks of the river it's named after (Balule is the Tsonga word for the Olifants River). It's known for its rustic, off-grid character rather than resort-style comforts:

• No electricity. The six three-bedded huts are lit with paraffin lamps, and a torch is essential after dark.
• A low perimeter fence, in keeping with the camp's back-to-basics, close-to-nature feel.
• Six huts plus 15 campsites. Huts share communal bathroom and kitchen facilities, with guests providing their own cutlery and crockery. Campsites run along the riverbank, some with river views.
• No shop or restaurant. Guests self-cater and stock up beforehand.

The camp is popular with caravanners, backpackers, and repeat Kruger National Park visitors looking for a quieter, more rustic alternative to the main rest camps.

Practical notes for travellers

• Check-in is via Olifants or Satara camp rather than at Balule itself, so this needs to be built into travel plans.
• No electricity on site – torches, headlamps, and spare batteries or a power bank are recommended.
• Activities aren't offered directly from Balule, but guided bush walks and game drives can be pre-arranged through Olifants.
• Some roads and bridges in the wider park are still under repair following this year's flooding, so it's worth confirming current access routes with SANParks closer to a travel date.
• Availability may be limited in the near term as demand catches up after the closure.

Kruger National Park: Renovations underway at Olifants Rest Camp and Balule Satellite Camp!

South African National Parks (SANParks) has announced that a series of renovations have commenced at Olifants Rest Camp in Kruger National Park from 15 August 2025 until further notice. These upgrades form part of ongoing efforts to improve visitor facilities and enhance the overall guest experience.

The renovation work includes:

• Olifants Camp Viewpoint - The popular viewing platform will be temporarily closed to the public during the refurbishment period.
• Balule Satellite Camp Huts Kitchen Facilities - Guests staying in Balule huts are advised to make use of the shared kitchen facilities at the Balule campsite.
• Repair of Fire-Damaged and Additional Units - Restoration of three units affected by fire, as well as maintenance on other accommodation units in the camp.

All other camp facilities will remain fully operational, and in-house guests are not expected to experience disruptions to their stay.

Olifants Rest Camp, perched high on a ridge in the central region of Kruger National Park, is famed for its sweeping views over the Olifants River, where hippos, crocodiles, and elephants are frequently seen. The camp offers a variety of accommodation options, a restaurant, a shop, and guided activities such as game drives and bush walks. Balule Satellite Camp, located nearby, is a more rustic and intimate setting with no electricity and limited facilities, appealing to guests seeking a true back-to-nature experience. Its peaceful atmosphere and excellent game-viewing opportunities make it a favourite among seasoned Kruger National Park visitors.

Olifants Rest Camp remains one of Kruger National Park's most scenic destinations, and while the viewpoint is closed during renovations, guests can still enjoy exceptional wildlife sightings and tranquil bushveld settings from other areas in and around the camp.
