Windhoek: Hosea Kutako International Airport regraded to Category 9

Hosea Kutako International Airport (WDH) in Windhoek, Namibia's biggest and main international runway, has been upgraded to Category 9 again by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO). The ICAO downgraded the airport to Category 5 two weeks ago following an audit of Namibia Airports Company’s (NAC) facilities at Hosea Kutako International Airport (WDH). According to the audit, Hosea Kutako International Airport (WDH) failed to meet international ICAO standards on fire and maintenance as well as the upkeep of the runway. As a result of the downgrade, Air Namibia was no longer allowed to operate its Airbus A330-200 fleet in or out of the airport until the Namibia Airports Company (NAC) rectified the shortcomings. Although Air Namibia made and announced plans to relocated its intercontinental flight operations affected by the downgrade to Gaborone and Lusaka, the airline never had to divert its Airbus A330-200 flights due to an examption granted by Namibia's Ministery of Works & Transport.
