South Africa: 1004 rhinos got killed by poachers in 2013

According to the final statistics for 2013 released by the Department of Environmental Affairs, South Africa has lost 1004 rhinos to illegal poaching in 2013. The number of people arrested for rhino poaching-related offences climbed to 343.
Of the rhinos poached, 606 rhinos were killed in the Kruger National Park, 114 in Limpopo, 92 in Mpumalanga, 87 in North West, 85 in KwaZulu-Natal, 8 in Gauteng, 5 in the Eastern Cape, 4 in the Free State and 3 in the Marakele National Park.

During 2012, 668 rhino were poached, while 448 were killed in 2011. Since 2008, 2 778 rhino have been poached in South Africa.

  • Kruger National Park (SANParks) - 606 rhinos poached
  • Marakele National Park (SANParks) - 3 rhinos poached
  • Gauteng - 8 rhinos poached
  • Limpopo - 114 rhinos poached
  • Mpumalanga - 92  rhinos poached
  • North-West Province - 87 rhinos poached
  • Eastern Cape - 5 rhinos poached
  • Free State - 4 rhino poached
  • KwaZulu Natal - 85 rhinos poached
  • Western Cape - 0 rhino poached
  • Northern Cape - 0 rhino poached

The Department of Environmental Affairs (DEA) is urging members of the public to report incidents of rhino poaching or any tip-offs to the anonymous tip-off lines 0800 205 005, 08600 10111 or Crime-Line on 32211.
