Lifelens: Fighting malaria with smartphones

The Lifelens project is a team of graduate students, who are attempting to win the Imagine Cup 2011 Software Design Competition held by Microsoft. They therefore developed a Smartphone app which will allow people to test for malaria right where they are.

The app provides diagnosis within minutes and is reducing the time to send the acutal sample to a hospital for diagnosis from a couple of days or weeks to near zero.
In other words the Lifelens app works as follows:
  1. Draw blood
  2. Place on slide to create smear
  3. Image with Lifelens' App
  4. Receive diagnosis and SMS export to server
  5. Disinfect slide
