South Africa: Kruger National Park is one of the most popular National Parks on TikTok!

South Africa's Kruger National Park is one of the most popular National Park on TikTok, a video-focused international social networking service. This is according to a study by US-based travel specialist ParkSleepFly, which gathered a list of all of the National Parks around the world and then ranked these according to the number of views posts tagged with the name of the National Parks had garnered on TikTok (as of 19 November 2021). Kruger National Park is ranked 9th on the list with 98,700,000 views. The most popular National Park on TikTok is Yellowstone National Park, followed by Denali National Park and Yosemite National Park. All three National Parks are located in the US. Serengeti National Park is the only other African National Park that made it to the list of the 51 most popular National Parks on TikTok. The National Park in Tanzania is ranked 16th with 73,900,000 views.

Social Media: Kruger National Park is one of the most popular selfie spots worldwide!

The international car hire comparison website Enjoytravel.com recently revealed a list of the most popular places in the world to take a selfie according to TikTok and Instragram. South Africa's Kruger National Park (#krugernationalpark) made it to the Top 10 with a combined total of 96,734,291 hashtags on Instagram (734,291) and TikTok (96,000,000). Disneyland in Paris, France, is the world's numer one spot for selfies with a total of 6,128,408,478 hashtags on Instagram and TikTok, followed by Disney World in Orlando, Florida (6,014,657,716 hashtags), and the Burj Khalifa in Dubai (1,505,198,505 hashtags).

South Africa is one of the World's most instagramable countries!

According to global travel site Big 7 Travel, which forms part of Big 7 Media, South Africa is the fifth most instagramable country worldwide. Australia was named the World's most instagramable country, followed by Hong Kong, Canada and Indonesia. To create the list of the most instagrammable countries 2019, Big 7 Travel used a comprehensive scoring system that analysed the amount of hashtags per destination, survey results of about 1.5-million Big 7 Media readers, and votes cast by a panel of travel experts.



World's Most Instagrammable Countries 2019:

  3. Canada – 82.84%

Namibia plans to prosecute people posting trophy hunting photos on social media!

update (11 July 2018): According to the Namibia Professional Hunting Association (NAPHA) "the implementation of the condition on the restriction of the posting of images of trophy animals on social media made by the Minister is for now on hold, until such time that the industry has reverted back with proposed guidelines for ethical marketing practices for the hunting community." [src.]

update (03 July 2018): According to recent media reports Namibia is still planning to punish individuals who post photos with dead wild animals on social media. The country's Ministry of Environment & Tourism is working on having the Nature Conservation Ordinance 4 of 1975 amended, so that posting photos of dead wild animals on social media platforms becomes illegal.

According to the Xinhua News Agency, the official press agency of the People's Republic of China, Namibia will start to prosecute people posting trophy hunting photos on social media once the new Protection Areas and Wildlife Management Bill passes into law. The news agency quotes Namibia's Environment and Tourism Minister Pohamba Shifeta saying at a press conference on 09 August 2017 "that people who kill wildlife, whether with a permit or not, and post photos on social media and boast will face the wrath of the law [...]". Africa: Poachers use geotagged safari photos to track endangered animals

Please always keep in mind while on safari that the photos of endangered animals you take and share online might also contain the exact co-ordinates to the picture. This will allow tech-savvy poachers to come in after dark and track the animal. Please switch off the geotag option/gps feature on your smartphone or gps-enabled digital camera while out in the bush. #savetherhinos

Johannesburg Zoo: Meet BG, the world's first live tweeting Honey Badger

Meet BG, the world's first live tweeting Honey Badger. From his home,a high-tech enclosure at the Johannesburg Zoo in Johannesburg, BG is tweeting about, well, his live in Joburg! See the video below to find more about the only Honey Badger in the world of social media!



Although Kruger National Park (approx. 5hrs) and Pilanesberg Game Reserve (approx 2.5hrs) aren't too far away, the Johannesburg Zoo is still worth a visit. The  81-hectare zoo, located in the leafy northern suburb of Parkview, is one of the few places in the world with white lions and the only zoo in South Africa to have successfully bred Siberian Tigers, the largest cats in the world. The Johannesburg Zoo is open Monday to Sunday and on public holidays including Christmas and New Years. Business Hours are 8:30 to 17:30; the last entry is at 16:00. The entrance fees are currently R50pp for adults and R30pp for children and pensioners.

South Africa: Mango's entire fleet is now online!

The entire fleet, comprising six new-generation Boeing B737-800 aircraft, of South Africa's low cost airline Mango is now fitted with the G-Connect In-Flight Wi-Fi service. The service allows full on-board Internet connectivity, including web browsing, sending and receiving of e-mails as well as the use of all social networks.
G-Connect is compatible with most WiFi-enabled devices, including smartphones, tablets and laptops.
Mango and G-Connect are celebrating the completion of the fleet rollout by offering on-board connectivity at R1 for a day pass and R2 for a week’s access pass during October 2012 on all flights.

South Africa's "online reputation" isn't too bad...

South African company Acceleration Media analysed South Africa's online reputation in a recent study. A total of 530,000 discussions about South Africa across social and news media was covered during August 2011 through the online reputation management tool Radian6, which was used in the study.
About 11% of the 530,000 discussions about South Africa were "strongly positive", while only 2% were "negative". The remaining 87% were pretty neutral (link sharing, news sharing etc.). Most topics covered tourism, trade oder investment related topics. Of the roughly 60,000 conversations which could be tracked amoung users from South Africa, 14% were "positive" and only 2% were "negative".
The majority of the international conversations about South Africa took place on twitter (39%), followed by blogs (21%) and facebook (14%), while about two-thirds off all discussions about South Africa made by South Africans happend on twitter (71%).
