Namaqua National Park: Wildflower season bursts into full bloom!

South African National Parks (SANParks) has confirmed that the flower season at Namaqua National Park is in full swing, transforming the arid Namaqualand landscape into a breathtaking mosaic of colour. Thanks to excellent seasonal rainfall, vast fields of daisies, succulents, and rare blooms are now carpeting the veld — an unmissable natural spectacle for flower lovers, photographers, and hikers alike.

For those wanting an up-close encounter with the smaller, rarer flowers, the park’s walking and hiking trails are a must:

Skilpad Walking Trail (5km circular)
A popular route during flower season, this trail takes visitors through the famous “flower carpets” of Skilpad. Starting and ending at the Skilpad office, it’s an easy, scenic walk suitable for most fitness levels. Maps are available at the office.

Korhaan Walking Trail (3km)
Also starting from the Skilpad office, this shorter route meanders through bushier terrain, offering a greater variety of flowering plants.

Heaviside Hiking Trail (6km)
A coastal adventure starting at the Abjoel viewing deck (15km north of Groenrivier Office), this trail descends a dune before following a rocky shoreline and a long stretch of pristine white sand. Along the way, hikers can spot humpback whales, Heaviside dolphins, and seabirds like the black oystercatcher. At low tide, tidal pools provide extra opportunities for exploration. The trail is one-way, with pick-up available at the boardwalk exit, or hikers can return the same way.

When is wildflower season in South Africa?

However, the season typically runs from late July to early October, with August and early September offering the most reliable and abundant displays, depending on winter rainfall.

West Coast National Park: Annual flower season kicks off! [update #3]

update (16 August 2024): According to SANParks, this year's wildflower season is having a bit of a late start to the season due to the inclement weather experienced across the Western Cape. However, the weather is looking promising over the next few weeks.
Tip: Keep an eye on the weather for the Langebaan area and plan around the most sunny day. 

South African National Parks (SANParks) has announced the start of the 2024 wildflower season in the West Coast National Park (WCNP). The Postberg section of the National Park is open to the public since 01 August 2024 and will close again on 30 September 2024.
During this period, visitors will notice that the Geelbek Restaurant is undergoing maintenance. To accommodate guests, three food trucks have been stationed in the Geelbek precinct, Tsaarsbank and Preekstoel area of the park, providing a variety of food and refreshments.

Gate times for Postberg are as follows:
09:00 to 17:00 with the last entry at 16:30

Gate times for the general park area are as follows:
August: 07:00 to 18:00 with last entry at 17:30
September: 07:00 to 19:00 with last entry at 18:30

Conservation fees for August and September are as follows (child < 12 years old):
South African National adult (with ID) – R110 per person
South African National child – R55 per person
Southern African Development Community (SADC) National adult (with passport) – R169 per person

The West Coast National Park (WCNP) is located about 90km north of Cape Town in South Africa's Western Cape. The National Park is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean on the west and the R27 coastal road, and runs from the town of Yzerfontein in the south, up to the Langebaan Lagoon. West Coast National Park is particularly well known for its bird life and for the spring flowers which occur in the months from August to September, especially in the Postberg section of the National Park.

West Coast National Park: Annual flower season kicks off!

South African National Parks (SANParks) has announced that the annual West Coast National Park (WCNP) flower season is set to kick off. Thanks to the substantial rainfall received during the winter season, the flowers, which can be viewed in the Seeberg, Mooimaak, and the Posberg sections of the national park, are set to burst into full bloom within the next week.

"We are excited about this year's flower season and the vibrant blooms are bound to mesmerize every visitor. The abundance of rainfall has worked wonders and we can't wait to showcase the beauty of our park during the months of August and September", said Charlene Adams, West Coast National Park (WCNP) Park Manager.

To make the most of this experience, SANParks is encouraging visitors to plan their trips on sunny weekdays. Weekends tend to be exceptionally busy, often leading to queues at the entrance and congestion in the flower viewing areas. By choosing to visit on weekdays, visitors can savour a more peaceful and immersive encounter with nature's magnificent display.

|Ai-|Ais/Richtersveld Transfrontier Park: The upcoming flower season in the arid Richtersveld region might be one of the best in decades!

South African National Parks (SANParks) has announced that there is a good chance that the upcoming flower season in the arid Richtersveld region of the |Ai-|Ais/Richtersveld Transfrontier Park will be one of the best in decades. This is due to exceptional rainfall the region experienced during the month of May and June 2023. The low mountains in the central parts of the National Park from Akkedispas to Helskloof received between 20-80mm of rain during these months whilst the high mountains, Vandersterrberg and the Ploegberg to Stinkfontein mountains in the Richtersveld World Heritage Site received between 100-120mm of rain.
Since the 26 May 2023 unusually cold temperatures persisted, accompanied by almost windless days. These conditions have been the most ideal conditions in almost two decades as little evaporation happened in between rainfall episodes, and the close proximity of the rain intervals has led to rare conditions to cause mass germination of annual seeds.
If the good current weather conditions persist, annual flower displays might start from mid July, during which times exceptional flower displays can be seen. The flower season is usually between mid-July through to the end of August but can even extend to September 2023 this year.

The |Ai-|Ais/Richtersveld Transfrontier Park spans some of the most spectacular arid and desert mountain scenery in southern Africa – and includes the Fish River Canyon, the largest canyon in Africa. The Peace Park straddles two countries, earning it two different names: It is |Ai-|Ais in Namibia and Richtersveld in South Africa. The quickest way to get to the National Park from the N7 (South Africa) and the B1 (Namibia) is to turn off at Steinkopf and approach via Port Nolloth and Alexander Bay with only the last 80km being on dirt.

Namaqua National Park: Rather late than usual flower season 2022!

South African National Parks (SANParks) has announced that the flower season in the Namaqua National Park in South Africa's Northern Cape is about to begin. It is expected that the brightly coloured wildflowers will start to peak from middle August 2022 and hopefully until the end of September 2022 or even into October 2022 as all indications are there that it will be a rather later than usual flower season. The flowers can be viewed at different routes inside Namaqua National Park including the very popular Caracal route to Kookfontein, the coastal route in the direction of the Hondeklip Bay gate and the 4x4 Kurubees area.

Namaqua National Park is located approximately 500km north of Cape Town and 21km west of
Kamieskroon, which is 67km south of Springbok. The National Park covers an area of more than 1300 km². The Namaqua National Park is part of Namaqualand, an area covering 55,000 km² located within the semi-desert Succulent Karoo biome. This biome is a biodiversity hotspot with the largest concentration of succulent plants in the world.

West Coast National Park: Annual flower season kicks off!

SANParks recommends to select sunny days to visit the national park. If at all possible, it is advisable to plan the visit on a week day. Weekend days are often very busy with queues developing at the gate, and congestion in the flower viewing areas within West Coast National Park . Please note the following information:

“We are excited about this year’s flower season. Although we had a substantial decrease in rainfall during the winter season, the flowers should be in full bloom within the next two to three weeks. During the August and September months, visitors to the park will see a wide variety of flowers on display, from daisies, to bulbs etc. Large areas of flowers can also be seen in the Seeberg\Mooimaak section of the park,” says Patricia Bopape - West Coast National Park (WCNP) Park Manager. 

West Coast National Park: Postberg section opened for annual flower season!

South African National Parks (SANParks) has announced that the West Coast flower season in South Africa's West Coast National Park will officially open in the second week of August 2021. The Postberg section of the National Park, which only opens during the flower season, has been opened to the public on 01 August 2021 and will close again on 30 September 2021. "The good rains, which the area has received this year, should make for an excellent flower-viewing season. We anticipate the flowers to be good from the second half of August up until mid-September," West Coast National Park's acting park manager Pierre Nel said in a statement.

Visitors are advised to plan visits on (sunny) weekdays as (sunny) weekend days are often very busy with queues developing at the gate, and congestion in the flower viewing areas. The Mooimaak Area will also be open for flower viewing. During a visit to West Coast National Park in flower season, visitors can expect to see the following species on display: Suurvy, Elandsvy, Gouwsblom, Bokbaai vygie, White rain daisy, Sporrie, Magriet, and Suituintjie.

West Coast National Park: Postberg section opened for annual flower season! [update]

South African National Parks (SANParks) has announced that the Postberg section of West Coast National Park has opened its annual flower season until the end of September 2020. The section will be open for selfdrives only therefore, no braai, picnicking and hiking will be permitted at this stage.
The Steenbok One Day Trail and the Postberg Two Day Hiking Trail, the only two hiking trails in the Postberg section, remain closed until further notice as per strict regulations stipulated under South African's alert level three.

Temporary gate operating hours came into effect as of the 04 August 2020: Monday to Sunday from 10:00 to 16:00, with the last entry at 15:00. Strict Covid 19 protocols follow upon entry. During this time, West Coast National Park is only operating from the Langebaan entrance.

Namaqua National Park: The flower season has started

According to a press release from South African National Parks (SANParks), the flower season has started in the Skilpad Section of the Namaqua National Park.
The typical orange carpets at Skilpad are in full bloom. Orange daisies (Ursinia sp.); Varkiesknol (Conicosia sp.); Sporries (Heliophila sp.) and Pietsnot (Grielum humifusum) are just some of the species coming out en masse. There is countless other species to see as well.
The areas around Soebatsfontein have some beautiful patches of purple and yellow vygies. The pass between Skilpad and Soebatsfontein (4x4 only) is also very rewarding. The road to the park has nice patches of a variety of flowers.
The coastal areas are showing amazing diversity and color. Please note that you need a 4x4 for the Namaqua National Park coastal section.
The road condition to Skilpad is average with a few corrugations.
Further afield most of the road reserves have a variety of flowers. Springbok, Nababeep and Okiep is spectacular.

• The little town of Kamieskroon is a proper "flower town" and you can easily spend a day or two in one of the local establishments and explore at your leisure.
• Goegab is beautiful as well. The road from Kakamas to Springbok has a surprising variety and offers something different. 
• The road to Arkoep has a large orange field, amongst other. 
• The road to Leliesfontein has large fields of white, orange and yellow flowers of various species.
