Mozambique has tightened its Covid-19 preventive measures again!

Mozambique's President Filipe Nyusi announced in an address to the nation on 24 June 2021 that the country maintains most of the Covid-19 preventive measures for another 30 days. The (adjusted) measures announced by the President already came into effect on Saturday, 26 June 2021, at midnight. They include:

  • In the Greater Maputo area and all provincial capitals there is a curfew in place from 22:00 to 04:00 every night.  The curfew also applies in Manhiça, Chokwe, Maxixe, Gondola, Moatize, Mocuba, Nacala, Montepuez, Massinga and Guruè.
  • Commercial establishments in Mozambique will be open from 09:00. – 19:00 Monday – Saturday, and 09:00 – 18:00 on Sunday. Restaurants may remain open until 21:00 every day.
  • Business and work visas are now authorized.
  • Religious services, conferences, celebrations and meetings in Mozambique are limited 40% of the capacity of the venues, and may never exceed 40 people for indoor venues and 80 people for outdoor venues.
  • Private social events in Mozambique are prohibited throughout the country, except for wedding registrations which may have 20 attendees maximum.
  • Additional safety measures are to be immediately implemented in all public establishments in Mozambique.
  • Public and private sector establishments in Mozambique will be held responsible for non-compliance with safety measures.
  • The use of a clear plastic face shield does not replace the use of a facemask.
  • Restaurants, take-aways and home delivery services in Mozambique close at 20:00.
  • Recreational and leisure sports and games are prohibited.
  • The operation of theaters, cultural centers and auditoriums in Mozambique is prohibited.
  • Large gyms may open to 40% of capacity; small gyms are not authorized to operate.
  • Hotel swimming pools in Mozambique may open for the use of hotel guests only.
  • The sale of alcoholic beverages by bottle stores, greengrocers or supermarkets in Mozambique is allowed between 09:00 and 15:00 from Monday to Saturday; no alcohol sales are permitted on Sundays or holidays. The sale of alcoholic beverages from stalls is prohibited.
  • Visiting beaches for leisure purposes in Mozambique is prohibited. Alcohol is not permitted on the beach.
  • Shopping centers are open from 09:00 to 18:00 from Monday to Saturday and from 09:00 to 15:00 on Sundays and holidays.
  • Public swimming pools in Mozambique may open to 30% capacity.

These measures are in addition to the prior measures already in place, some of which include:

  • All incoming travelers must present a negative test for COVID-19.
  • All persons displaying respiratory symptoms or fever must stay home.
  • Discos, bars and stalls selling alcoholic beverages will remain closed.
  • Teleworking is recommended, in particular for people at higher risk

Covid-19: Mozambique is gradually easing restrictive measures!

Mozambique's President Filipe Nyusi announced in a televised address to the nation on 26 May 2021 the gradual easing of the restrictive measures imposed to combat Covid-19 in the country. Beaches as well as public swimming pools have been reopened; the curfew times, which is in force on all cities in Mozambique, is now between 23:00 and 04:00.  


Current measures also include:

  • Commercial establishments in Mozambique are open from 09:00. – 19:00 Monday – Saturday, and 09:00 – 18:00 on Sunday. Restaurants remain open until 21:00 every day.
  • Business and work visas are now authorized.
  • Religious services, conferences, and meetings resume with a maximum of 75 people for indoor venues and 150 people for outdoor venues.
  • Private social events are prohibited throughout Mozambique, except for wedding registrations which may have 20 attendees maximum.
  • Government events must not exceed 150 participants.
  • Additional safety measures are to be immediately implemented in all public establishments.
  • Public and private sector establishments in Mozambique will be held responsible for non-compliance with safety measures.
  • The use of a clear plastic face shield does not replace the use of a facemask.
  • Recreational and leisure sports and games are prohibited.
  • Casinos, museums, theaters, galleries, and similar cultural venues in Mozambique may open up to 40% capacity.
  • Large gyms may open to 40% of capacity; small gyms are not authorized to operate.
  • Hotel swimming pools in Mozambique may open for the use of hotel guests only.
  • The sale of alcoholic beverages by bottle stores, greengrocers or supermarkets is allowed between 09:00 and 17:00 from Monday to Saturday; no alcohol sales are permitted on Sundays or holidays. The sale of alcoholic beverages from stalls is prohibited.
  • The beaches are open for swimming and walking only; sunbathing and gatherings are not permitted. Alcohol is not permitted on the beach.
  • Public swimming pools may open to 30% capacity.
  • The validity of expired documents is extended until 30 June 2021.

These measures are in addition to the prior measures already in place, some of which include:

  • All incoming travelers must present a negative test for COVID-19.
  • All persons displaying respiratory symptoms or fever must stay home.
  • Discos, bars and stalls selling alcoholic beverages will remain closed.
  • Teleworking is recommended, in particular for people at higher risk

Covid-19: Mozambique extends (revised) mitigation measures for an additional 30 days!

Mozambique's President Filipe Nyusi announced in a televised address to the nation on 25 April 2021 that the mitigation measures to combat Covid-19 are getting extended for an additional 30 days from 27 April 2021. According to the President, the following (revised) measures will be in force in Mozambique from 00:00 on Tuesdays, 27 April 2021.


  • Casinos, museums, theatres, cinemas, auditoriums, galleries and cultural centres in Mozambique are allowed to reopen at a maximum of 40% of the capacity of the place and under strict observance of the health protocol.
  • Gyms (classes A and B) are allowed to reopen at a maximum of 15% of the capacity and under strict observance of the health protocol.
  • Hotel are allowed to reopen their swimming pools for hotel guests only.
  • Shopping centres are now allowed to open from 09:00 to 19:00 (Monday to Saturday) and from 09:00 to 18:00 (Sundays and holidays).
  • Extending the operation of bakeries, pastries from 05:00 to 20:00.
  • The curfew (22:00 to 04:00) in the Greater Maputo Metropolitan Area (Maputo, Matola, Marracuene, and Boane) and all other nine provincial capitals in Mozambique (Xai-Xai, Inhambane, Beira, Chimoio, Tete, Quelimane, Nampula, Pemba and Lichinga) is getting extended to Manhiça, Chokwe, Maxixe, Gondola, Moatize, Mocuba, Nacala, Montepuez, Massinga.
  • Religious services, conferences and meetings as well as religious celebrations are allowed to resume under certain conditions (?).
  • State events are allowed to resume with a max of 100 participants
  • Mozambique's football championship is allowed to resume without spectators

Covid-19: Mozambique has extended the mitigation measures for an additional 21 days!

Mozambique's President Filipe Nyusi announced on 05 April 2021 the extension of the mitigation measures to combat Covid-19 for an additional 21 days from 06 April 2021. He also announced that the curfew in place since February 2021 in the Greater Maputo Metropolitan Area (Maputo, Matola, Marracuene, and Boane) is getting extended to all other nine provincial capitals in Mozambique (Xai-Xai, Inhambane, Beira, Chimoio, Tete, Quelimane, Nampula, Pemba and Lichinga). The Government adjusted the curfew, which now starts at 22:00 and lasts until 04:00 the following morning.

Covid-19: Mozambique introduces new mitigation measures! [update]

update (09 March 2021): Mozambique's President Filipe Nyusi on 04 March 2021 extended the mitigation measures to combat COVID-19 for an additional 30 days. Schools are allowed to reopen and the 14 teams that compete in the Mozambique's national football championship are allowed to resume training, but all the other restrictions announced in previous government decree remain in force.

Mozambique's President Filipe Nyusi announced new mitigation measures to combat the spread of Covid-19 on 04 February 2021. The new regulations are valid from today (05 February 2021) until 07 March 2021. According to Nyusi's televised address, prior measures are generally maintained, with a number of additional or more stringent measures being introduced, including the following travel/tourism-related regulations:

  • A curfew every night between 21:00 to 04:00 in the Greater Maputo Area (Maputo, Matola, Marracuene, and Boane)
  • Commercial establishments are allowed to be open from 09:00 - 19:00 (Monday – Saturday) and 09:00 - 16:00 (Sunday). Restaurants may remain open until 20:00 every day.
  • The sale of alcoholic beverages from stalls is prohibited.
  • Private events are limited to a maximum of 20 people.
  • Public and private sector establishments will be held responsible for non-compliance with safety measures.
  • Recreational and leisure sports and games are prohibited.
  • The use of a clear plastic face shield does not replace the use of a facemask.

These measures are in addition to the prior measures already in place, some of which include:

  • All persons displaying respiratory symptoms or fever must stay home.
  • All incoming travellers must present a negative test for Covid-19.
  • Discos, bars etc. selling alcoholic beverages remain closed.
  • The sale of alcoholic beverages by liquor stores, supermarkets etc. is only allowed between 08:00 and 13:00 from Monday to Saturday.
  • Cultural and recreational activities in cinemas, theatres, museums, galleries, cultural centers and catering establishments are suspended.
  • Gyms, swimming pools and other sports venues dedicated to the practice of physical exercises remain closed.
  • The beaches in Mozambique are closed for purposes of physical and leisure activities; however, this restriction does not apply to sidewalks, pedestrian zones and boardwalks adjacent to beaches.

Coronavirus pandemic: Zimbabwe imposes a dusk-to-dawn curfew!

With effect from today (22 July 2020), Zimbabwe imposes a dusk-to-dawn curfew (18:00 - 06:00) to curb rising cases of Covid-19 in the country. Only essential services are exempted from the curfew. All business premises must operate from 08:00 - 15:00, with exception of providers of essential services. Only registered small and medium enterprises are allowed to operate and must adhere to World Health Organization (WHO) Covid-19 regulations. All non-working sections of the population are required to stay at home, except for purposes of securing food, water and health services. Public gatherings for social, religious, and political purposes remain banned. Funeral gatherings remain curtailed in line with health requirements. Zimbabwe's security services, including the military and police, must enforce the lockdown measures.
