Table Mountain National Park update: Hiking trail closures & reopenings after recent fires!

South African National Parks (SANParks) has issued an important update regarding trail access in Table Mountain National Park (TMNP) in Cape Town following the recent wildfires in the Camps Bay area. While many popular routes have now reopened, SANParks is urging all hikers and visitors to remain cautious, as fire-affected areas may still pose risks.
According to SANParks, the following hiking trails and access points in the northern section of Table Mountain National Park are now open again to the public:

Access to trails in the Deer Park area remains closed due to lingering hot spots and safety concerns. Deer Park is located on the eastern slopes of Table Mountain, just above the suburb of Vredehoek, and is a popular access point for short hikes, dog walking, and connecting routes to Devil’s Peak and the Contour Path. Visitors are strongly advised to avoid this section until further notice.

SANParks teams are actively monitoring flare-ups and carrying out mop-up operations to ensure visitor safety. All hikers are reminded to:

  • Stay on designated open trails
  • Be alert for falling rocks, unstable ground, or smoldering vegetation
  • Follow official SANParks guidance at all times

Table Mountain National Park remains one of Cape Town's most iconic attractions, drawing both locals and international visitors for its breathtaking scenery and diverse hiking opportunities. If you are planning a hike in the coming days, check for real-time updates from SANParks before heading out.

By exercising caution and respecting temporary closures, visitors can help ensure that Table Mountain’s unique biodiversity recovers quickly after the recent fires.

Two beaches in Cape Town named among world’s top 20 most beautiful beaches!

Online gambling company Betway recently searched the internet for the world'd best beaches. To set up a ranking of the top 100 beaches in the world, data was analysed from each location to determine average temperature in August or January (depending on location) as well as amount of precipitation, number of Instagram tags and reviews with a positive sentiment on TripAdvisor. The aforementioned data points were then indexed and given a weighted score between 0-100. Data is up to date as of June 2023.
According to Betway's ranking, two beaches in Cape Town made it to the top 20. Camps Bay beach in Camps Bay has been named the 15th most beautiful beach in the world with an average temperature of 27,6 degrees in January, an estimated 118mm of rainfall, and has been tagged on Instagram over 460.000 (#campsbay & #campsbaybeach) times, while Hout Bay beach in Hout Bay (average temperature in January: 27.1 degrees, 90mmm of rainfall and 237.000 #houtbay hashtags on Instagram) was ranked 20th.

Cape Town: Camps Bay Drive closed for five months

update (02 Dec 2015): After nearly seven months of major roadworks along Camps Bay Drive in Cape Town, the road has been reopened on 30 Nov 2015.

update (06 Oct 2015): Due to a number of unexpected challenges that have delayed the project, Cape Town's Camps Bay Drive will remain closed to general traffic until late in November 2015. The scenic route has been closed to traffic since 20 April 2015.

The City of Cape Town will be undertaking major roadworks along Camps Bay Drive this winter to significantly improve the road condition and safety for road users. The road will therefor be closed for general traffic as from Monday 20 April 2015 until end of September 2015 if everything goes according to plan.
Stop-and-go control points will be in operation between Geneva Drive and Prima Avenue and Houghton Drive and Rontree Avenue to give access to residents who live in the vicinity of the roadworks. Commuters can make use of Geneva Drive as an alternative route to enter or exit Camps Bay. The City of Cape Town expects major delays and advises road users to take this into account when planning your journey.

Get ready for some daydreaming: "Cape Town - I love this city" (video)

Get ready for some daydreaming! On Friday, 24 May 2013, Otto Whitehead and his friend Steve headed up Table Mountain to film the heavy fog over the Atlantic Seaboard rolling into Cape Town and Camps Bay. As the sun set and it cooled down, the fog rolled in under the full moon... Stunning! Kudos Otto for the video and Steve for the weather prediction! Enjoy!
