Kruger National Park Access Alert: R531 (Orpen Road) washed away near Shimungwe Gate

The R531 (Orpen Road) remains completely closed between the Wits Rural Facility and Shimungwe Gate following a catastrophic road collapse that washed away a massive 15-meter wide, 40-meter deep section of the route. As of late May 2026, SANRAL is fast-tracking emergency procurement approvals to deploy heavy rebuilding machinery to the site. In the meantime, all traffic accessing Kruger National Park via Orpen Gate must utilize the designated detour via Skagula Clinic and Acornhoek to reconnect with the R40. Travellers are strictly urged to avoid navigating these poorly signed detour backroads at night, remain clear of the highly unstable collapse site, and consider using Phalaborwa or Paul Kruger gates as safer alternatives.  

Update 08 May 2026: SANRAL Fast-Tracking Repairs on Collapsed R531 Near Orpen Gate

There has been a significant development for travellers accessing Kruger National Park via Orpen Gate, with South African National Roads Agency (SANRAL) now reportedly fast-tracking repairs to the collapsed section of the R531 (Orpen Road) near Shimungwe Gate. Municipal officials and technical teams recently revisited the site and confirmed that the damage remains extensive, with heavy rainfall believed to have weakened the road foundation before the collapse. Emergency procurement processes are now underway to accelerate repairs and reconstruction planning, while warning signage and traffic diversions remain in place. Although no reopening date has yet been announced, this is the clearest indication so far that the project is moving beyond assessments and into the repair phase. Travellers should continue using alternative access routes to the central Kruger region via Paul Kruger Gate, Phalaborwa Gate, or Hoedspruit-area detours until further notice. 

Update 23 April 2026: Repair assessments underway on R531 (Orpen Road) near Kruger National Park

Travellers using the R531 (Orpen Road) route to access Kruger National Park via Orpen Gate can expect progress following the recent road washaway near Shimungwe Gate.

According to local reports, the Executive Mayor of Bushbuckridge Local Municipality, Councillor Moroane, visited the damaged section of Orpen Road together with the MMC for Public Safety, Councillor Mhaule, ward councillors, and senior municipal officials to assess the situation on site.

Technical teams are now preparing a full assessment of the damage, which will help determine both immediate temporary repairs and the longer-term reconstruction required to restore the route safely.

The municipality has also indicated plans to engage provincial stakeholders to help accelerate repairs and unlock the necessary funding. Fast-tracking the project is considered a priority, as the R531 is an important link for local communities, tourism traffic, and trade in the region.

For visitors heading to Kruger National Park, this is a positive sign that efforts are underway to restore normal access. Until repairs are completed, travellers should still plan for alternative routes and allow extra travel time when entering or exiting via the Orpen area.

update (01 December 2025): SANParks has confirmed that the previously announced community protest issue at Orpen Gate has been resolved. Orpen Gate is now open for guests travelling to and from Orpen. Protesters have since dispersed and the road cleared of any and all blockades.  

South African National Parks (SANParks) has announced that Orpen Gate, located on the western boundary of Kruger National Park between Hoedspruit and Acornhoek, is currently inaccessible due to a community protest related to land-claims issues. As a result, visitors are temporarily unable to enter or exit the Park through this gate.

Travellers planning to access the central and southern regions of Kruger National Park are advised to use alternative routes until SANParks issues further updates. Recommended alternative entry points include:

• Phalaborwa Gate – ideal for reaching central Kruger National Park areas such as Letaba and Mopani.
• Paul Kruger Gate – a convenient option for guests heading towards Skukuza, Lower Sabie or Berg-en-Dal.
• Phabeni Gate – suitable for access to the southwestern regions of Kruger National Park.
• Numbi Gate – offering an additional southwestern entry point (check for security updates before travel).
• Malelane Gate – perfect for visitors travelling from Maputo Corridor or N4 towards southern Kruger National Park.

Guests travelling toward Orpen, Satara, Tamboti, or Maroela areas should adjust their itineraries accordingly and allow additional travel time.

Kruger National Park: Orpen Gate temporarily inaccessible for both entry and exit! [update]

update (21 March 2024): SANParks has informed the public that Orpen Gate has been cleared and is now accessible for guests to enter and exit Kruger National Park. 

South African National Parks (SANParks) has informed the public this morning that Kruger National Park's Orpen Gate is currently inaccessible for both entry and exit. The landclaimants of that area are peacefully protesting regarding landclaims issues. SANParks is advising guests to use alternative gates, such as Phalaborwa Gate, to enter and exit Kruger National Park until such time. We'll keep you posted!
Orpen Gate is located in the western region of Kruger National Park. It provides access to the central and western parts of the National Park. Phalaborwa Gate is approximately 140 kilometers north from Orpen Gate via the R40 and R71 roads. 

Kruger National Park: R40 blocked by protesters between Acornhoek and Bushbuckridge!

South African National Parks (SANParks) earlier today (25 January 2023) announced that the R40 has been blocked by protesters between Acornhoek and Bushbuckridge. Guests traveling between Orpen Gate/ Orpen Rest Camp in the Kruger National Park and the town of Hazyview outside the National Park are adviced to use alternative routes preferably travel inside Kruger National Park.
Orpen Gate/ Orpen Rest Camp is situated centrally on the western border of the Kruger National Park. According to SANPArks, the recommended way to get to Orpen Gate/ Orpen Rest Camp from central Gauteng by road is the following: Head toward Nelspruit on the N4 and take the R540 Belfast turn off. At Lydenburg turn left onto the R36 heading north. 30 km before Hoedspruit turn right onto the R531 and head to Orpen Gate. Allow between 4 to 5 hours for the trip to the gate. Orpen Rest Camp is right at the gate.
