Cape Town update: What Muizenberg beach visitors can expect this festive season!

The City of Cape Town has made significant progress on the Muizenberg beachfront redevelopment, now ten months underway. While major work on the new seawall and upgraded public amenities continues, temporary measures will ensure smooth access for holiday visitors.

Festive-season arrangements (December 2025 – January 2026)
Construction pauses from 19 December 2025 to 12 January 2026, with several key facilities remaining open. Visitors will have temporary access to the St James Walkway via the western parking area. The temporary access will be compacted, but unpaved, and unfortunately not yet wheelchair friendly. A small section of the western parking area next to the railway line will be available to the public – visitors must note that this will be on gravel as the area is still under construction

The bathing boxes, central ablutions, showers, NGO buildings, and most of the promenade and beach will remain fully accessible. Only the active work zones - including the western corner of the beach - will stay fenced off for safety, although the surf remains open.

The eastern parking area upgrade is complete and fully operational. Temporary ablutions and the Shark Spotters office will be in place for the builders’ break and ready for work to resume in early January 2026.

Cape Town: Iconic Muizenberg Beach Huts to be replaced and relocated!

The City of Cape Town has announced that the eight iconic beach huts on Muizenberg Beach in Cape Town will be replaced with new huts that replicate the original design, colours, and patterns. Due to the upcoming promenade upgrade, the existing huts—currently situated near the Waves for Change and Shark Spotters buildings—must be removed, as the new promenade will be positioned approximately two meters further inland. This setback is necessary to address climate change-related challenges such as rising sea levels and storm surges while ensuring that the new seawall does not reduce the width of the beach.

Relocating the existing huts is not a viable option, as dismantling, storing, and reconstructing them would likely result in damage. Instead, the replacement huts will be installed at the central plaza, where they will also serve as a wind shelter for the central shower area.

The City of Cape Town has announced that the refurbishment of the Muizenberg beachfront is set to commence by mid-February 2025. The project entails major upgrades to public amenities and replacing the aged seawalls, and will be complete by the end of 2026.

The first work of the project will commence along the western section of Surfer’s Corner, next to the railway line. The beach will remain open and accessible at all times.

  • new ablution facilities
  • a new pergola
  • an upgraded playground
  • relocation of all eight beach huts

Muizenberg is located along the False Bay coastline in Cape Town, approximately 25 km from the city center. It is part of the southern suburbs and is easily accessible via road or train. The beach is famous for its wide, sandy shoreline and gentle waves, making it one of the most popular destinations in Cape Town.

Cape Town: Muizenberg coastal walkway repairs underway!

The City of Cape Town’s Coastal Management branch has announced that concrete repairs and maintenance of the Muizenberg coastal walkway between Muizenberg and St James are set to commence. The project will also include specific repairs to the St James tidal pool.
The repair work forms part of the ongoing coastal infrastructure maintenance. In terms of the coastal walkway, the main focus will be on the section from St James up until just before the Baileys Cottage. Then, at the St James tidal pool, the main break in the pool wall and various leaks will be repaired. The project is expected to be completed by 30 November 2023.
The work will be split into three phases starting from the St James tidal pool. All visitors to the area will be diverted from the coastal walkway to the pavement along Main Road via the railway underpasses while construction is under way. The phases, respective underpasses and the estimated timing of each phase will vary.

The City of Cape Town will provide adequate signage to direct the public accordingly:

  • Phase 1 is planned to take place from 16 October 2023 to 02 November 2023
  • Phase 2 is planned to take place from 03 November 2023 to 17 November 2023
  • Phase 3 is planned to take place from 20 November 2023 to 30 November 2023

The site camp for the walkway construction team will be located at the Surfer's Corner Parking area behind Muizenberg Station.

The City of Cape Town will commence with repairs to the St James Tidal pool on 23 October 2023, pending any adverse weather and sea conditions. The work should be concluded by the end of October 2023 if all goes as planned. During this time the pool and showers will be closed to the public.
