Karoo National Park visitors advised of game capture operations in August 2026

Travellers visiting Karoo National Park between 11 and approximately 25 August 2026 should be aware that South African National Parks' (SANParks) Game Capture team will be carrying out wildlife capture operations within the park during this period.

Karoo National Park remains open as normal and there is no need to change your travel plans.

For safety reasons, SANParks requests that all self-driving guests steer well clear of ongoing wildlife capture operations.

What does this mean for visitors?

Game capture forms part of SANParks' ongoing wildlife management programme and may involve the relocation of animals to other conservation areas. These operations require specialised vehicles, helicopters and trained personnel working in specific sections of Karoo National Park.

If you come across a game capture operation while driving through Karoo National Park, SANParks asks visitors to keep well clear of the area. This helps ensure the safety of both guests and the wildlife being handled.

Staff members on site may temporarily restrict access to certain roads or ask motorists to wait until operations have been completed.

Travel tips

If you're planning to visit Karoo National Park during this period:

  • Follow all instructions from SANParks staff.
  • Obey any temporary road closures or access restrictions.
  • Keep a safe distance from helicopters, vehicles and wildlife involved in the operation.
  • Allow some flexibility in your day's driving route in case short delays occur.

Game capture activities are generally localised and temporary, so most visitors should still be able to enjoy the park's spectacular landscapes and excellent wildlife viewing with only minimal disruption.

Bottom line

The planned game capture operations are part of routine conservation management and should have only a limited impact on most visitors. As long as you keep clear of operational areas and follow instructions from park staff, you can continue to enjoy your visit to Karoo National Park safely.
