Corona virus pandemic: Iziko Museums of South Africa temporarily closes eight museum sites in Cape Town! [update]

update (14 April 2020): Iziko Museums of South Africa remains closed at least until 30 April 2020!

Iziko Museums of South Africa, which operates eleven national museums, the Iziko Planetarium and Digital Dome, the Social History Centre and three collection-specific libraries in Cape Town, has announced the closure of eight museum sites from today (18 March 2020). The sites will be closed for a period of 21 days until 17 April 2020, after which the situation will be reassessed. According to Iziko these measures are geared to prevent and reduce the impact of the outbreak, and internal transmission of the virus.
The following Iziko museums sites are temporarily closed:

  • Bertram House
  • Bo-Kaap Museum
  • Koopmans de Wet House
  • Old town House Museum
  • Rust en Vreugd House Museum
  • Slave Lodge
  • South African National Gallery
  • South African Museum and Planetarium
All public programmes, planetarium shows, scheduled commemorative day events, the mobile museum outreach activities, venue hire undertakings, tours to our museums, field trips and research related endeavours, as well as conferences, travel and meetings have been suspended. Public Access to Iziko libraries and collections will also be restricted. All of these will be reviewed after 21 days.
