Cape Town: Nettleton footpath at Lions Head temporarily closed!

South African National Parks (SANParks) has announced that the Nettleton footpath at Lions Head in the Table Mountain National Park in Cape Town will be temporarily closed due to the collapsed footpath embankment. This closure is necessary to stabilize the area and ensure public safety and easy access. Only the link between Nettleton Road and the gum belt will be temporarily closed for the repairs. SANParks kindly requests National Park visitors to utilize the alternative footpath from Arcadia Road to access Lions Head.

Lion's Head is a mountain in Cape Town between Table Mountain and Signal Hill. It peaks at 669 metres above sea level. Lion's Head is known for its views of both the city and the Atlantic Seaboard. Hikes up to the top is particularly popular during full moon. The next full moon will be on 21 July 2024.

Table Mountain National Park: Lion's Head summit has been reopened to the public!

South African National Parks (SANParks) has announced that the Lions Head summit situated within the Table Mountain National Park (TMNP) reopens today. Cape Town's famous landmark was closed to the public since June 2020 due to coronavirus pandemic. SANParks encourages all users to adhere to the regulations to avoid possible re-closure of the the Lions Head summit. The following protocols have been put in place:
  • Rangers will be positioned at various entry points to check that users are compliant with Covid 19 regulations stipulated by South Africa's National Coronavirus Command Council (NCCC).
  • Limitations of user numbers may be imposed at the sergeant ranger’s discretion.
  • Maintain social distancing by at least 1.5m at all times.
  • Users accessing the summit must wear their masks at all times. No mask no entry.
  • Users are to sanitize their hands before and after making use of the staples/ladder and or chain area of Lions Head.
  • Picnicking and gathering in social groups is not allowed.

Table Mountain National Park: SANParks closes Lion's Head! [update]

South African National Parks (SANParks) just announced the temporary closure of the Lion's Head section of Table Mountain National Park with immediate effect.  Cape Town's famous landmark will be closed until further notice. According to SANParks, this decision was made due to the fact that people have not followed rules in relation to thee alert level three regulations of the nationwide lockdown in South Africa.
"Due to the nature of the trail, recreational activities are no longer permitted in these areas due to none compliance by users in accordance to the Alert Level 3 regulations of the Nationwide Lockdown." [SANPArks, 06 June 2020]

Cape Town: Lions Head closure! [update]

update (21 March 2020): The Lions Head spiral footpath, the Kramat access and the footpath is now open. The jeeptrack to Kloofnek office footpath and the footpath from Arcadia Street to Kloof Road are still closed due to fire damage until further notice. The Glen picnic area, footpath, and the cycle trail are still closed due to fire damage until further notice.

The management of Cape Town's Table Mountain National Park has announced that the main spiral foodpath up Lions Head, the Kramat access to the spiral footpath and the footpath from Arcadia Street to Kloof Road are currently closed due to fire assessment until further notice. The Glen picnic area, the footpath, and the cycle trail are also currently closed as well due to fire assessment until further notice.
