Air Traffic and Navigation Services (ATNS), the company that provides air traffic, navigation, training and associated services within South Africa, has announced that the instrument landing system (ILS) flight procedure for Runway 11 at King Phalo Airport (ELS) in East London has been approved by the South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA). According to ATNS, this ensures that both runways, 29 and 11, at the airport will have valid procedures in place. As a result of this development, flight operations at King Phalo Airport (ELS) are expected to improve, reducing the likelihood of flight disruptions as witnessed recently. We'll keep you posted!

update (20 November 2024): According to Air Traffic and Navigation Services (ATNS), today's disruptions at King Phalo Airport (ELS) in East London were not due to the absence of instrument flight procedures for Runway 11, which was in use. The cloud base was at 100 feet and therefore below the acceptable minima. As a result, some flights were diverted toKing Shaka International Airport (DUR) in Durban and Chief Dawid Stuurman International Airport (PLZ) in Gqeberha/Port Elizabeth.
Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) has informed the public that King Phalo Airport (ELS) in East London in South Africa's Eastern Cape is currently experiencing flight delays. According to ACSA, this is due to inclement weather in the Eastern Cape. ACSA has also informed the public that some flights have been diverted to King Shaka International Airport (DUR) in Durban and that "delays are anticipated throughout the morning". Eastern Cape: Significant flight disruptions at King Phalo Airport (ELS) in East London! [update]
update (22 Octobe 2024): According to Air Traffic and Navigation Services (ATNS), today's flight disruptions at King Phalo Airport (ELS) in East London were not related to the instrument flight procedure maintenance programme. ATNS can confirm that flight procedures for the two runways in this airport are operational. This morning, the airport experienced severe weather conditions that fell below acceptable approach minima. The cloud base was under 300 feet, requiring missed approaches (go-arounds) until conditions improved.

According to ACSA, this is due to adverse weather conditions today, 22 October 2024.
The disruptions have been compounded by lapsed Air Traffic and Navigation Services (ATNS) procedures. Eastern Cape: Bad weather grounds flights at King Phalo Airport (ELS)! [update #2]
update (09 October 2024): The Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) just announced that operations at King Phalo Airport (ELS) in East London in South Africa's Eastern Cape have returned to normal.
update (08 October 2024): Air Traffic and Navigation Services (ATNS) SOC Limited has confirmed that the South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA) has assured the entity that instrument flight procedures for one of the airports two precision approach runways (Runway 11) are being expedited and approvals are expected tomorrow, 09 October 2024.
The Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) just announced that due to adverse weather conditions in East London in South Africa's Eastern Cape, all inbound and outbound flights have been postponed at King Phalo Airport (ELS) today, 08 October 2024, until further notice. ACSA will monitor the weather conditions throughout the day, and should conditions allow for optimal safe flight operations, will resume normal operations. We'll keep you posted!

Eastern Cape: Drop-Off Lane at King Phalo Airport in East London temporarily closed!
Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) has informed the public that the Drop-Off Lane at King Phalo Airport (ELS | formerly East London Airport) in East London in the Eastern Cape is closed during the month of November 2023. Pick-ups and Drop-offs are getting redirected to the Open Parking area, where vehicles are getting a grace period of 10 minutes. Vehicles that are still within the 10 minutes may proceed to the exit stations.

Due to road works taking place at the R72 ("Settlers Way"), the Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) is reminding passengers travelling to and from King Phalo Airport (ELS | formerly East London Airport) in East London in the Eastern Cape to allow sufficient travel time. The check-in time for domestic departures is two hours prior to departure. The R72 ("Settlers Way) is the only access road to King Phalo Airport (ELS).

South Africa has renamed two cities, three towns and two airports in the Eastern Cape! [update]

South Africa's Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture, Nathi Mthethwa, has officially announced a number of name changes for towns, cities and airports as well as spelling corrections and the official registration for existing geographical names in South Africa's Eastern Cape. The changes were published in a Government Gazette (Government Gazette Vol. 668 No. 44181) on 23 February. The Minister approved the new geographical names for the following towns, cities and airports:
- Port Elizabeth International Airport (PLZ) > Chief Dawid Stuurman International Airport
- Port Elizabeth > Gqeberha
- Uitenhage > Kariega
- East London Airport (ELS) > King Phalo Airport
- King Williams Town > Qonce
- Berlin > Ntabozuko
- Maclear > Nqanqarhu
