Johannesburg: OR Tambo International Airport (JNB) operating normally amid ongoing e-hailing strike!

Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) has confirmed that operations at OR Tambo International Airport (JNB) in Johannesburg remain unaffected by the ongoing e-hailing driver strike. Despite the protests disrupting e-hailing services in the city, passenger movement at the airport continues without interruption. To ensure safety and ease of travel, ACSA advises all travellers to use accredited and authorised transport services when arriving at or departing from the airport.

The ongoing strike - led by frustrated e-hailing drivers - centres around demands for fairer commission structures, higher per-kilometre fares, and industry regulation to address growing economic strain. Drivers have raised concerns over unsustainable earnings due to high commission fees, fuel prices, and permit delays. While services across Johannesburg have experienced delays and cancellations, operations at major transport hubs like OR Tambo International Airport (JNB) remain stable and secure.

Travellers departing from OR Tambo International Airport (JNB) are reminded to:

  • Arrive at least 2 hours before domestic departures
  • Arrive at least 3 hours before international departures

ACSA: OR Tambo International Airport (JNB) in Johannesburg fully operational despite e-hailing driver protest!

Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) has confirmed that operations at OR Tambo International Airport (JNB) in Johannesburg are continuing without disruption. While some e-hailing services were suspended during the demonstration, ACSA has assured travellers that the airport remains fully operational. All flight operations and airport services are functioning as normal.

ACSA' security team  is actively collaborating with the South African Police Service (SAPS) to ensure a safe environment and smooth travel experience for all passengers and airport users.

Travellers departing from OR Tambo International Airport (JNB) are reminded to:

  • Arrive at least 2 hours before domestic departures

OR Tambo International Airport (JNB), Johannesburg: Relocation of public transport operators!

Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) has announced the relocation of public transport operators such as e-hailing, shuttles and meter taxis at OR Tambo International Airport (JNB) in Johannesburg to ease traffic congestion. These services are now available and accessible at the Central Pick up and Drop off, Parkade 2 - level 2. The designated area enables passengers to swiftly get into their preferred transport and effortlessly leave the airport as well as seamlessly be dropped off and access the terminal. Passengers that will be picked up and dropped off by their family and friends will still be able to do so on the roadway, quickly and hassle-free.

Access to Parkade 2 - level 2:

There are separate entrances to Parkade 2, depending on which direction one is coming from. As a passenger who needs to access e-hailing, meter-taxis of shuttles can use the following guidelines:

From Domestic Arrivals

  • Proceed up the escalators to the food court level
  • Take the exit opposite Wimpy in the food court, where the Police Kiosk is located
  • Proceed through the glass doors over the bridge
  • You are now at Parkade 2 - level 2

From International Arrivals (Option 1)

  • Proceed through the arrivals doors leading onto the roadway
  • Go across the road and enter the terminal using the glass door on the left
  • Take the escalators to Parkade 2 – level 2
  • Exit through the glass doors into the parkade (Parkade 2 – Level 2)

From International Arrivals (Option 2)

  • Proceed up the escalators behind the information desk
  • Make your way towards the centre passage above the arrivals atrium (follow Parkade 2 signage)
  • Proceed down the passage to Parkade 2 level 2 and exit through the doors into the parkade.

Please note: ACSA also said that it is aware that its pick up and drop off offering at OR Tambo International Airport (JNB) has not historically been the best but this initiative is to tackle and alleviate those challenges.

South Africa: reduced Shosholoza Meyl passenger train service

Due to a ongoing financial dispute between the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa) and Transnet, the Shosholoza Meyl passenger train service in South Africa is currently running at only about 50% of their "normal" service" supplemented by City to City and Translux bus services.

  • Johannesburg to Komatipoort (Sun - Fri)

Johannesburg: Catch the Rea Vaya to games

A special World Cup service is set to be laid on by Rea Vaya, Joburg's Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system, on match days to get football fans to the stadium as quickly and efficiently as possible.
"The most watched sporting event on the globe kicks off in our country in a few days and requires a world-class public transport solution. And the Rea Vaya BRT system is a critical part of that," says the City's portfolio head of transport, Rehana Moosajee.
The 2010 FIFA World Cup begins on 11 June in Johannesburg, and ends on 11 July, with the final again played in Jozi.
The city has two match venues - Ellis Park on the eastern edge of the CBD, and Soccer City in the west on the outskirts of Soweto, reports Joburg.org.
Moosajee says the Rea Vaya service schedule applicable during the World Cup will include an event service that will run on match days from Constitution Hill, in Braamfontein, and Westgate Station, in the inner city, as well as from other Rea Vaya stations in the CBD and Soweto.
There will be a Rea Vaya Park and Ride at Constitution Hill; and there is parking at Westgate Station.
"We urge spectators to buy their tickets early so that they can get space at their preferred [parking] venue."
Spectators using the Constitution Hill Park and Ride will receive a Rea Vaya return ticket included in the parking fee. Passengers boarding at other Rea Vaya stations are encouraged to buy a return ticket at a cost of R12 to avoid queuing for tickets after the match.
"We are planning to transport 20 000 spectators to both Ellis Park and Soccer City on match days and will be able to move spectators speedily and safely to the game and after the game has finished.
"This means we have had to reconfigure some of the service schedule times for optimum usage," said Moosajee.
This means that with Rea Vaya performing its special service on match days, the usual service will not run as normal on those days:
  • On Friday, 11 June, normal services will stop from 11am and there will be no afternoon peak time service.
  • On Saturday, 12 June, normal services will stop from 12 noon and there will be a limited afternoon service only for T1, which is to Thokoza Park.
  • On Monday, 14 June, there will be no normal service from 9am.
  • On Tuesday, 15 June, normal services will stop from 4pm and there will be a limited afternoon service to Thokoza Park only.
  • On Thursday, 17 June, there will be no normal Rea Vaya service from 9am.
  • On Friday, 18 June, normal services will stop from 11am.
  • On Monday, 21 June, normal services will stop from 4pm, with a limited service going to Thokoza Park only.
  • On Wednesday, 23 June, normal services will not run from 4pm.
  • On Thursday, 24 June, normal services will stop from 11am.
  • On Monday, 28 June, normal services will stop from 4pm, with a limited service to Thokoza Park only.
On Friday and Saturday, 2 and 3 July, normal services will stop at 4pm.
Lisa Seftel, the executive director of transport in the City, apologises to commuters for the inconvenience. "The World Cup is here ... we must all play our role for the games to succeed."

Johannesburg's Gautrain will start operating on 08 June 2010; announces fares

Gautrain will start operating on 08 June 2010 and has therefore announced their current fares for the train service linking stations at Sandton, Marlboro, Rhodesfield and the O.R. Tambo International Airport as well as bus routes from Sandton and Rhodesfield stations (map).
The system will open with two train services:
  • The “Airport Service” will link Sandton to the O.R. Tambo International Airport. Airport passengers can board at any station and will pay R100 for a single train trip to the airport. All airport trains go via Sandton station.
  • The “Commuter Service” links all the stations with the exception of the airport. A single train trip from Sandton to Marlboro will cost R16.50, from Sandton to Rhodesfield R21.00; and from Marlboro to Rhodesfield R18.50.
Integrated single train plus single bus trips will cost R22.50 from Sandton to Marlboro, R27.00 from Sandton to Rhodesfield; and R24.50 from Marlboro to Rhodesfield.
Parking at any station will cost R9.50 for the first 24hrs or part thereof as long as you also use the train. If you park and do not use the train, the parking fee is substantially increased.

Commuters will access all services by means of a contactless smart card – the Gautrain Gold Card. Cash will not be accepted for passage on the buses or trains or at the parking exit gates. The Gautrain Gold Card allows seamless transfer between Gautrain’s train, bus and parking services. Gautrain Gold Cards will be available at a once-off cost of R10 from ticket offices and ticket vending machines at all stations as well as at selected retailers. Value can then be loaded onto the cards on an as-required basis and the cards can be re-used over and over again to pay for Gautrain services. Passengers also have the opportunity of registering their Gautrain Gold Cards at a ticket office which will enable the blacklisting of a card should it be lost or stolen. Un-used value on the card can then be transferred to a new card.
The train and bus services will operate from Monday to Sunday between 05:30 to 20:30. Trains and buses will be available every 12 minutes during peak times (05:30 to 08:30 and 16:00 to 19:00), and every 20 minutes during off-peak times. On weekends the train service will be available every 30 minutes.[src.]

Nelspruit's 2010 transport plans in place

The Mbombela Local Municipality in Nelspruit, Mpumalanga, has announced its FIFA World Cup transport plan to accommodate the influx of visitors and ease potential traffic congestion. "This system is put forward to ensure that travelling in and around Nelspruit is safe and convenient for residents and visitors," said Mbombela 2010 World Cup coordinator Differ Mogale.
"The transport system is an additional service to the regular day-to-day public transport system already in place. It comprises a public transport hub, six park-and-ride points and one park-and-walk point, all with free and secure parking, as well as an airport pickup point.
"Shuttle services to the stadium, Fan Fest and public transport hub will be operational from the park-and-ride and airport pickup points," he said.
Mogale said 600 branded buses and minibus taxis would provide the shuttle services, with a number of primary and alternative routes that had been developed to ensure the system runs smoothly and traffic congestion is kept to a minimum.
"The transport venues will open three hours before the first match of the day and close two hours after the last match of the day. Shuttle services will run every 20 minutes, depending on demand, and will be free from June 11 to 25. Thereafter a nominal fee will be charged," he said.

The Mbombela Stadium will not provide public parking for general spectators on match days and entry will be strictly enforced by law enforcement officials.
About 650 transport volunteers have received training and will be on hand to assist spectators using the transport system at all the transport venues.
"Event-specific signage will be installed throughout the host city to guide the public to dedicated transport venues," said Mogale.
He added that print and broadcast media awareness campaigns would be undertaken and detailed pamphlets made available prior to and during the World Cup.
Road users passing through Nelspruit, especially the freight industry, have been encouraged to use the N4 ring road detour route, which is fast nearing completion. Road signs will be erected on the N4 to identify the route.

Public transport in Durban during the 2010 World Cup

Durban is trying to cut the use of private transportation in the 2010 World Cup affected areas to a minimum and has therefore installed a pretty impressive public transport system. The fact that all World Cup attractions in Durban are within walking distance of each other, makes it even more easy not to use your (rental) car.
Heart of Durban's 2010 World Cup public transport plan is The Centrum (adjacent to the Workshop Shopping Centre in the city center; see map!). The Centrum will be the hub of the transport system and will be well-managed to ensure the system operates at maximum efficiency and users receive whatever assistance they might need in reaching their next destination.

View The Workshop, Durban in a larger map

From the Centrum pre-designated Fan-Routes will enable fans to walk to the Moses Mabhida Stadium, or the Fan Fest and beachfront.
Please visit Durban's 2010 World Cup website for more info on transport options during the World Cup and/or make use of the specially made Journey Planner, which will calculate for you travel schedules, provide you with timetables fares and important contact information.

UPDATE (09 June 2010): The Municipality will operate special shuttle services between the CBD transport hub next to the Workshop complex and several shopping centres (Galleria, Pavilion and Gateway), as well as between the CBD transport hub and the new King Shaka International Airport.

  • Cape Town Station
  • Golden Acre bus terminus
