If you are planning to visit Durban keep in mind that one of the city's popular tourist attractions, the SkyCar at the Moses Mabhida Stadium, is currently grounded for annual service until further notice. The SkyCar is a funicular mounted on an undercarriage that carries visitors from the north side of the stadium to a viewing platform at the top of the stadium's arch at 106m above the pitch, offering 360º views over Durban and the Indian Ocean. The Top Gear Festival returns to Durban!

The world's most widely watched factual television programme, the British TV show Top Gear, is returning to Durban in South Africa for the third time with the Top Gear Festival.
The festival will take place in the Moses Mabhida Stadium on the 21 & 22 June 2014. Tickets are on sale now from iTickets and range from the Basic Ticket at R260 to R1995 for a SuperSport Elite Village.
Visitors can expect to experience all-new Stadium & Street Circuit Shows, a massive motoring expo showcasing exciting first-time features, music shows, a bike zone, a stunt school, as well as some of the most stylish, rare & expensive cars ever made, along with the latest gadgets, luxury goods, car accessories & motoring technology.
btw - all three presenters, Jeremy Clarkson, James May & Richard Hammond as well as "The Stig", are going to be there!

Public transport in Durban during the 2010 World Cup
Durban is trying to cut the use of private transportation in the 2010 World Cup affected areas to a minimum and has therefore installed a pretty impressive public transport system. The fact that all World Cup attractions in Durban are within walking distance of each other, makes it even more easy not to use your (rental) car.
Heart of Durban's 2010 World Cup public transport plan is The Centrum (adjacent to the Workshop Shopping Centre in the city center; see map!). The Centrum will be the hub of the transport system and will be well-managed to ensure the system operates at maximum efficiency and users receive whatever assistance they might need in reaching their next destination.

From the Centrum pre-designated Fan-Routes will enable fans to walk to the Moses Mabhida Stadium, or the Fan Fest and beachfront.
Please visit Durban's 2010 World Cup website for more info on transport options during the World Cup and/or make use of the specially made Journey Planner, which will calculate for you travel schedules, provide you with timetables fares and important contact information.

Germany from a South African perspective
Durban newspaper The Mercury is running a series of profiles of countries playing at the Moses Mabhida Stadium during the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
Germany, playing in Durban against Australia on 13 June 2010, was the first country to be featured in The Mercury (Monday, 8 March). The next special focus (Australia) will be in the edition of Monday, March 15. I'll keep you posted!

2010 World Cup™ stadiums - Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban
Durban's new "Moses Mabhida Stadium" was built on the site of the old Kings Park Stadium adjacent to the ABSA Stadium and the Durban street circuit used for the A1GP World Cup of Motorsport. It is somehow the new heart of the Kings Park Sporting Precinct. The 70,000-seater has been specifically designed as a multi-purpose venue and an amphitheatre complete with a cable car which ascends to a viewing platform at the top of the expansive 350m arch, a staggering 106m above the pitch.
The Stadium is named after Moses Mabhida (14 October 1923 – ?? March 1986), who was a South African politician and leader of the South African Communist Party (SACP) from 1978 until his death in 1985.

Durban is the third most populous city in South Africa (roughly 3.5 million), forming part of the eThekwini (Zulu word for Durban) metropolitan municipality. It is the largest city in KwaZulu-Natal and is famous as the busiest port in Africa. Stretching along beautifull beaches, Durban has eversince been known as one of South Africa's great escapes - in terms of holidays of course.
