From sunrise surf sessions to laid-back seaside strolls, South Africa’s beloved KwaZulu-Natal coast offers the perfect mix of warm waters, golden sands, and relaxed coastal charm.

Durban – South Africa’s Coastal Playground

Vibrant and sun-kissed, Durban remains one of South Africa’s most beloved seaside destinations. With its subtropical climate, warm Indian Ocean surf, and the iconic Golden Mile promenade, it’s no wonder that both local and international travellers return year after year. Visitors can enjoy world-class surfing, beachfront markets, outdoor cafés, and family-friendly attractions all within walking distance of the city’s shoreline.

To keep the coastline clean and safe, the eThekwini Municipality conducts regular water quality monitoring and publishes frequent safety updates. These ongoing efforts ensure that every swim, surf, or beach day in Durban remains both enjoyable and environmentally responsible.

Beaches temporarily closed
For now, Anstey’s Beach and Reunion Beach remain temporarily closed due to elevated water contamination levels. While swimming and surfing are restricted, visitors can still enjoy sunbathing, beach walks, and photography. These beaches will reopen once water quality meets the required safety standards.

Durban’s public swimming pools

Prefer a controlled swimming environment? Durban operates 40 public swimming pools across the metro - ideal for families, casual swimmers, and fitness enthusiasts. These pools offer a clean, lifeguard-supervised alternative to ocean swimming, ensuring everyone can make a splash safely.
