Great news for beach lovers! Durban’s world-famous coastline is open and ready to welcome visitors, with 21 beaches declared safe for swimming this week. From sunrise surfing sessions to relaxed seaside strolls, South Africa’s beloved KwaZulu-Natal coast offers the perfect mix of sunshine, warm waters, and laid-back charm.
Durban – South Africa’s coastal playground
The vibrant city of Durban remains one of the top seaside destinations in South Africa, known for its golden sand beaches, warm Indian Ocean waves, and year-round subtropical climate. Both local and international travellers flock here to enjoy its dynamic surf culture, beachfront promenades, and family-friendly attractions along the iconic Golden Mile.
To keep the coastline safe and enjoyable, the eThekwini Municipality conducts ongoing water quality tests and publishes regular beach safety updates. These measures ensure that every swim, surf, or beach day in Durban remains as clean and safe as possible.

Beaches temporarily closed
At present, Anstey’s Beach and Reunion Beach are temporarily closed due to elevated water contamination levels. While swimming and surfing are currently restricted, visitors can still enjoy sunbathing, photography, and coastal walks. The eThekwini Municipality will reopen these beaches once water quality meets the required safety standards.
Durban’s public swimming pools
For those seeking a controlled swimming environment, Durban also operates 40 public swimming pools across the metro area - perfect for families with children, casual swimmers, and fitness enthusiasts alike.
