The Barberton Makhonjwa Geotrail (Mpumalanga, South Africa)

The Barberton Makhonjwa Geotrail is a 37km selfdrive route (guided tours are also available) between Barberton and the Bulembu border gate into Swaziland that takes you more than 3,5 billion years into the past. The geotrail has a series of beautifully landscaped laybys at sites of geological interest and uses richly-illustrated and information-rich panels, that reveal the significance of the Barberton Greenstone Belt in every-day language and concepts.

The Barberton Makhonjwa Mountains of the Barberton Greenstone Belt are on the tentative list of UNESCO’s World Heritage Site programme.
