Songea in Tanzania's Southern Ruvumu Region has been declared a new tourism site by the Tanzanian ministry of Tourism. Between 1905 and 1907 the city was a centre of African resistance during the Maji Maji Rebellion in German East Africa.
A National Museum to commemorate the hanging deaths of 70 Africans by German administrators of the time has been constructed in the town. Other tourist attractions include the Matongo Forest Reserve and the German Boma (castle).
