CapeNature, the public institution with the responsibility for biodiversity conservation in South Africa's Western Cape, has launched South Africa's first slow hiking trail. Located at the beautiful De Mond Nature Reserve, the two-day linear Damara Trail features a gentle slope, smooth terrain, and scenic rest stops situated along the route. It has been designed for ages 8-years and older and all fitness levels.
On day one, hikers embark on a 5.5km hike (+-2hrs) leading to an overnight wooden deck facility, where a tent can be set up. Day two extends the journey with an 11.km hike (+-4hrs) along a scenic coastal route, where the trail will end on the beach in Arniston.
Hikers have the option of spending the second night at any of the accommodation establishments in Arniston. Thereafter a dedicated shuttle service will collect visitors and transfer them back to the De Mond Nature Reserve.
The De Mond Nature Reserve is a beautiful coastal nature reserve at the mouth of the Heuningnes River. It lies about 26km south-east of Bredasdorp on the south-western Cape coast, between Arniston and Struisbaai. The World Heritage Site is known for its picnic spots, thriving birdlife, and unparalleled coastal views.
