The South African Animal Sanctuary Alliance (SAASA) was named overall winner of the World Responsible Tourism Awards 2014 and won the Gold Award as "Best Animal Welfare Initiative". Congratulations! The Award ceremony was hosted at the World Travel Market on World Responsible Tourism Day (05 Nov 2014) and was presented by Justin Francis, Managing Director of responsibletravel.com, organiser and founder of the Awards, and by Her Excellency Maitha Al Mahrouqi, Undersecretary of Oman Ministry of Tourism, headline sponsor of the Awards.
The sanctuaries of SAASA include the Monkeyland Primate Sanctuary (located in The Crags, near Plettenberg Bay), Birds of Eden (located next to Monkeyland) and the Jukani Wildlife Sanctuary (Plettenberg Bay).
World Responsible Tourism Awards 2014 also went to the Hotel Verde (Best City Hotel) and the V&A Waterfront (Best Destination) in Cape Town as well as to Mdumbi Backpackers in Mdumi Beach in the Eastern Cape (Silver Award for Best for Poverty Reduction). Congratulations!
