has released updated lists of beaches that are currently (as of 28 May
2024) open and safe for swimming, closed for swimming and of swimming
pools that are currently open to the public. According to the lists, 14
beaches in Durban
are currently open for swimming, while swimming at nine beaches is
prohibited due to water quality. 32 swimming pools in Durban are
currently open to the public.

The management of Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park has announced that guests that are staying at the Botswana side of the Transfrontier Park will need to provide proof of their accommodation booking at reception upon entering and existing Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park. The new regulation becomes effective as of 01 June 2024. Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park is located largely within the southern Kalahari Desert. It straddles the border between South Africa and Botswana and comprises two adjoining national parks - the Kalahari Gemsbok National Park in South Africa and the Gemsbok National Park in Botswana. The Transfrontier Park is 35 551 km² in extent, of which 73% is in Botswana with the remainder in South Africa.
The Namibian Ministry of Home Affairs, Immigration, Safety and Security has published a media release regarding the implementation of visa requirement for non-reciprocating countries. According to the media release, the decision to introduce an entry-visa requirement to countries that have not reciprocated the favourable treatment granted to their national when visiting Namibia is aimed at fostering fair and ballanced diplomatic relations. It will affect a total of 31 countries. The date of implementation and application of the new visa regulation will be communicated at a later stage. We'll keep you posted!

The Motsamayi Tourism Group, which manages the facilities at Cape Point in the Cape of Good Hope section of Table Mountain National Park in Cape Town, has announced that they are currently experiencing a power failure at Cape Point due to cable theft. This means that the Flying Dutchman Funicular is currently non-operational. We'll keep you posted!
The Flying Dutchman Funicular, also known as Cape Point Furnicular, runs between the Cape Point parking area and the viewing point below the lighthouse. The track is 585m long, and rises 87m from the lower station (at 127m m a.s.l) to the upper station (at 214m m a.s.l). The Flying Dutchman Funicular was the first commercial funicular of its kind in Africa.

South African National Parks (SANParks) has announced that the two hiking trails in the Zuurberg section of Addo Elephant National Park, the Cycad Trail and the Doringnek Trail, have been temporarily closed due to wet and muddy conditions after overnight rain. The Zuurberg Mountains are located in the northern part of Addo Elephant National Park. The area is characterized by rugged mountain terrain, deep valleys, and expansive plateaus. It forms part of the Cape Fold Belt, which is known for its unique geological formations. Wildlife in this section includes various mammals such as baboons, bushbuck, kudu, and mountain reedbuck. Predators like leopards are also present but are more elusive. The Zuurberg section is notable for its rich plant diversity. It includes ancient cycads, proteas, and a range of endemic and rare plant species. The fynbos vegetation, in particular, is a key feature of the landscape. The Cycad Trail is a 2 kilometers hiking trail, while the Doringnek Trail is a circular route approximately 8 kilometers long.
The Kingdom of eSwatini is set to introduce a total ban on all single-use plastic carrier bags. According to a press statement by the Ministry of Tourism and Environmental Affairs issued on 22 May 2024, the ban becomes effective 01 December 2024 from the issuance of a Government gazette. Under the terms of the ban, all retailers, supermarkets, manufacturers and vendors in eSwatiniwill be prohibited from selling or providing for free single-use plastic shopping bags to customers. This encompasses bags made from traditional plastic materials, including polyethylene and polypropylene, regardless of thickness. Customers are encouraged to make use of reusable alternatives such as cloth bags, paper bags or durable tote bags.
In exercise of the powers conferred under Section 89 of the Environmental Management Act, 2002, the Minister of Tourism and Environment[al] Affairs through Legal Notice No. 155 of 21 May 2021, published the Control of Plastic Bags Regulations to regulate the production, importation and use of plastic bags; promote the reuse, recycling, and safe handling of plastic bags; and ultimately ban production, importation and use of plastic bags in Eswatini. Pursuant to Regulation 14 of the Control of Plastic Bags Regulations, 2021 and a landmark decision aimed at combating environmental degradation and promoting sustainable practices, His Majesty’s government today announces a total ban on all single-use plastic carrier bags. According to news reports from Namibia, the Governemt of the southern African country is set to introduce entry visa requirements for countries that have no reciprocal visa arrangements with Namibia. The proposal, which was submitted by the Namibian Minister of Home Affairs, Immigration, Safety and Security, has already been approved by the Cabinet. This was announced by the Deputy Minister of Information and Communication Technology, Modestus Amutse, during the presentation of the cabinet decisions on 23 May 2024. We'll keep you posted!
The Zambia Airports Corporation Limited (ZACL) has announced that Mfuwe International Airport (MFU), which serves the tourism industry based on the nearby South Luangwa National Park and other wildlife areas in the Luangwa Valley, will undergo a period of rehabilitation, commencing on 13 June 2024. The scope of work will comprise rehabilitation of the runway, taxiway and apron pavements, upgrade of the airfield ground lighting (AGL) system to replace the current one which is obsolete, re-construction of the inner perimeter fence, and extension of the terminal building. The upgrade of the airport is expected to take 90 days. The Zambia Airports Corporation Limited (ZACL) initially planed to close Mfuwe International Airport (MFU) during the rehabilitation period, but the Government of Zambia has directed the ZACL to ensure that the airport remains open as works are being undertaken to improve the infrastructure. According to the Zambian Minister of Transport and Logistics, Frank Tayali, the Government is of the view that the closure of the Mfuwe international Airport (MFU) will cause serious disruptions especially during this peak period in the tourism industry.
The Government of South Africa has introduced a new remote working visa. The amendments to the country's immigration regulations were gazetted on 20 May 2024. The new visa, which is introduced as a species of visitors visa, allows foreigners to work remotely for a foreign employer while residing in South Africa. However, applicants for the new remote working visa must have an annual income of at least R1 million [approx. GBP43 000 | €50 000 | USD 54 000]. If the new visa is issued for a period not exceeding six months, the foreigner may apply to be exempted by the South African Revenue Services (SARS) from registering as a taxpayer. If the remote working visa is issued for a period longer than six months within a 36-month period, the foreigner must register with SARS.
The flag carrier of Malawi, Malawi Airlines, has announced the introduction of a fourth weekly service to Kenya. The airline will add a flight on Sundays to its current schedule between Kamuzu International Airport (LLW) in Lilongwe and Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO) in Kenya's capital Nairobi. The additonal service will commence on 02 June 2024. Malawi Airlines currently operates three weekly return flights between Lilongwe and Nairobi on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays.
The Namibian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Works and Transport, John Mutorwa, has officially opened low volume seal access roads on Impalila Island in Namibia'sZambezi Region on 16 May 2024. The newly constructed district roads 3546, 3547, and 3575, which include minor access roads to public institutions, are approximately 25 kilometres long. The project was jointly funded by the Roads Authority and the Road Fund Administration at a total cost of approximately N$151,9 million.
“The island's rocky terrain with soft clay soil created severe mobility and accessibility challenges to essential services and government offices. This terrain became a nightmare during the rainy season, making vehicle operations cumbersome and leading to high vehicle operating and transport costs. Now that the construction of the roads is completed, I am sure motorists and the community on the island have experienced a reduction in vehicle operating & transport costs and seamless all weather access to essential services such as Government offices, Schools, Health Centres, and many Tourism Facilities", said John Mutorwa, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Works and Transport.
Impalila Island is situated in the Zambezi River, near the confluence with the Chobe River. It is located at the easternmost tip of Namibia, in the Zambezi Region, and borders three countries, namely Zambia, Botswana and Zimbabwe. The island is relatively small, approximately 12 kilometers long and up to 2 kilometers wide. Impalila Island is known for its scenic beauty, wildlife safaris, fishing, bird watching, and boat cruises on the Zambezi and Chobe rivers.
The Tanzania-Zambia Railway Authority (TAZARA) has announced that the reopening of the mainline, which was temporarily closed on 01 April 2024 due to landslides and formation failures caused by heavy rains in the Mlimba–Makambako area of Tanzania. As a result, normal train operations will resume immediately, with passenger trains planned to run as follows:
Kilimanjaro Ordinary Passenger Train: The inaugural journey will depart from Mbeya to Dar es Salaam on 25 May at 18:00.
Udzungwa Shuttle Passenger Train: The first journey will depart from Makambako to Kidatu on 25 May 2024 at 19:00

The Tanzania-Zambia Railway Authority (TAZARA) is a bi-national railway, jointly owned by the Government of Tanzania and the Government of Zambia on an equal share-holding basis. The 1,860 km-rail runs from Tanzania and East Africa’s major seaport of Dar es Salaam into the heart of Zambia'sCentral Province, terminating at New Kapiri-Mposhi, where it is further linked by road and rail to Zambia's capital city, Lusaka (about 200 km), Zambia's mining nerve centre, the Copperbelt province (about 100 km) and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
The City of Windhoek has recently renamed seven streets in Windhoek, Namibia, to honour individuals who have made significant contributions to their communities and Namibia. Several new streets were also named. According to the Namibian Minister of Urban and Rural Development, Erastus Uutoni, the renaming of these streets serves as a testament to Namibia's challenging and painful history, as all honorees have contributed immensely to the attainment of the country’s independence. African Parks, a conservation NGO that manages 22 protected areas in partnership with 12 governments across Africa, has announced that it has officially launched the rewilding phase of "Rhino Rewild", an ambitious plan to rewild 2,000 southern white rhino into secure protected areas in Africa over the next 10 years. The Munywana Conservancy in Northern KwaZulu Natal, South Africa, received 40 southern white rhino in support of the conservancy's successful conservation and community efforts. To achieve a successful outcome of this translocation, the animals' body condition and parasite adaptation will be closely monitored as they adjust to their new environment. In addition, the conservancy will implement its intensive security measures to ensure the safety of the 40 dehorned rhino.
The Munywana Conservancy, a collaboration of private and community landowners, is a protected wildlife conservation area in Northern KwaZulu Natal, South Africa, spanning 29,866 hectares. The conservancy has a proud history of successful conservation endeavours and groundbreaking research which have been instrumental to the protection of threatened species including rhino, cheetah, pangolin, lion and elephant.
update (22 May 2024): ACSA has announced that the baggage sortation system at O.R. Tambo International Airport Terminal B is fully operational again.
Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) has informed the public that passengers at OR Tambo International Airport (JNB) in Johannesburg are currently experiencing delays in baggage processing. The baggage handling system at the (domestic) Terminal B is currently down. Due to "network challenges", bags are unable to be processed through the sortation system. ACSA's IT network technicians are actively engaged in fault finding to resolve this matter. However, until a solution is implemented, manual baggage processing procedures have been activated. Zambian privately owned regional carrier Proflight Zambia has announced a revision to its baggage policy for domestic flights in Zambia, effective immediately. The new policy provides a 23 kg free checked baggage allowance for all fare types. The updated policy allows domestic passengers the benefit of a standard checked baggage allowance of 23 kg at no extra cost, regardless of the fare type purchased. This also applies to passengers with existing tickets booked or purchased prior to the revision. Proflight Zambia's international checked baggage allowance of 30 kg still applies to passengers holding a ticket with both Proflight Zambia international and Proflight Zambia domestic flights. Proflight Zambia uses a weight concept only, with no piece concept, so weight allowances are not limited to one bag and may be spread across a number of bags. Baggage allowances may also be shared with family or friends booked with the same reservation reference, or with family under different reservation references so long as family surname matches.
LATAM Airlines Brasil, the Brazilian brand of the LATAM Airlines Group, considered the largest airline company in Latin America, is set to increase its three-weekly service between São Paulo/Guarulhos–Governador André Franco Montoro International Airport (GRU) in São Paulo (Brazil) and OR Tambo International Airport (JNB) in Johannesburg. Effective 28 October 2024 (01 November 2024?), the airline will operate two additional weekly return flights to Johannesburg.

South African National Parks (SANParks) has announced that that the petrol pumps at the Total Energies service station at Orpen Rest Camp in Kruger National Park are currently not working. This is due to a system error. TotalEnergies have been made aware of the issue. We'll keep you posted! Orpen Rest Camp is situated in the central-western region of the Kruger National Park. It is located near the Orpen Gate, which is one of the entry points into the National Park. Facilities at the rest camp include a restaurant, grocery store, fuel station and a swimming pool to cool off during the warmer days. Additionally, there are picnic sites and communal kitchen facilities available for use.
The Management of Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park has announced that due to monthly stocktaking all shops in the National Park will have to temporarily change its operating hours on selected dates at the end of May 2024. The shops at Nossob Rest Camp (on 22 May 2024) and Mata-Mata Rest Camp (on 23 May 2024) will only be open from 07:00 to 09:00 and from 15:00 to 18:15, while the shop at Twee Rivieren Rest Camp will only be open from 15:00 to 18:15 on 27 May 2024.

update (06 October 2025): According to ESPN cricinfo (on 25 August 2025), the (Fale) Mosi-oa-Tunya International Cricket Stadium in Victoria Falls is scheduled to be ready by August 2026 and is expected to host matches in the 2027 ICC Cricket World Cup. The website further reports that the stadium has already had the main pitch planted, irrigation installed, and grass embankments completed. Work is now being done on the players' pavilion and media centre, as well as with the water and power supply infrastructure.
update (22 August 2025): The Cabinet of Zimbabwe reported in early August 2025 that construction of the Mosi-oa-Tunya International Cricket Stadium in Victoria Falls is progressing well, with the media centre and training pitch now 50 percent and 40 percent complete, respectively.
update (21 March 2025): Earlier this month, the Zimbabwe Cricket Managing Director, Givemore Makoni, announced significant progress at the Mosi-oa-Tunya International Cricket Stadium in Victoria Falls. Most of the groundwork has been completed. The new stadium is set to be finished in time for the 2027 ICC Cricket World Cup.
update (22 July 2024): Construction has begun on the Mosi-oa-Tunya International Cricket Stadium in Victoria Falls. According to Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) managing director Givemore Makoni has confirmed that civil works, including water works and fencing, are underway.
Zimbabwe is set to build a new multi-purpose stadium in Victoria Falls. According to the 14th post-cabinet briefing 2024, Zimbabwe Cricket, the national governing body for competitive cricket in Zimbabwe, was allocated 10 hectares of land for the construction of an (international cricket) stadium and ancillary facilities in the Masuwe Special Economic Zone for Tourism in Victoria Falls. The new stadium will be used in the hosting of the 2026 ICC Under-19 Men's Cricket World Cup, which will be held in Zimbabwe and Namibia, and the 2027 ICC Cricket World Cup, scheduled to be played in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia. According to news repots from Zimbabwe, the country's President Emerson Mnangagwa is expected to lay the foundation stone on the site of the new stadium on 23 May 2024. The stadium is expected to be completed in August 2025. The venue will seat 10,000 and will also be able to host other sports such as rugby, tennis, hockey, and squash We'll keep you posted!
The national airline of the Republic of Zambia, Zambia Airways, has announced the launch of a new regional service to East Africa. Effective 27 June 2024, the airline will operate three return flights from Kenneth Kaunda International Airport (LUN) in Lusaka to Julius Nyerere International Airport (DAR) in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, and Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO) in Nairobi, Kenya. Flights will be operated on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.
South African National Parks (SANParks) has announced that the trail connecting Smuts Track and Echo Valley trail in the Northern Section of Table Mountain National Park in Cape Town is temporarily closed until further notice. This is due to the recent fires in Table Mountain National Park that caused damage to the infrastructure. SANParks has decided to close the trail to ensure public safety and facilitate the necessary rehabilitation and repairs of the wooden boardwalks. We'll keep you posted!
Smuts Track is a 4km hike and one of the most popular walks on Table Mountain. It starts in the Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens, but the heart of this route begins at the intersection of Skeleton Gorge and the Contour Path. Echo Valley Trail also starts in Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens, located on the eastern slopes of Table Mountain. The main loop trail is approximately 3km to 4km long.
According to news reports from Malawi, the flag carrier of the country, Malawi Airlines, is planning to launch new routes to three African countries. The marketing mangager of the airline, Only Taulo, told local reporters recently that Malawi Airlines will introduce new services to Rwanda, Mozambique and Uganda. Flights to Kigali in Rwanda as well as Nampula and Pemba in Mozambique will "soon" be introduced, while the launch of flights to Uganda is expected to take place towards the end of 2024. update (21 May 2024):SANParks has informed the public that maintenance work has been completed for a footbridge along the hiking trail at Camps Bay Pipe Track in the northern section of Table Mountain National Park in Cape Town.
South African National Parks (SANParks) has informed the public that maintenance work is currently underway at the Camps Bay Pipe Track in the Table Mountain National Park in Cape Town. The work is including the fixing of gabions to prevent soil erosion ahead of the winter rainy season and the construction of a hiking trail footbridge. SANParks kindly request hikers to exercise caution during this time. The maintenance work is expected to be completed by Friday, 24 May 2024.
Pipe Track is a 6km hiking trail that is located on the slopes of Table Mountain, overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. It starts near the Kloof Nek parking area and follows the path of an old water pipeline that was built in the late 19th century to supply water to Cape Town. Although the Pipe Track does not go up all the way to the top of Table Mountain, it circles around the mountain.
South African National Parks (SANParks) has informed the public that the Waterside Boardwalk in the Ebb and Flow Rest Camp in Garden Route National Park's Wilderness section is temporarily closed until further notice. Due to the recent floods, the Waterside Boardwalk has incurred structural damages, rendering it unsafe for public use. According to SANParks, work is underway to address the situation. Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) has informed the public that passengers departing from or arriving at Cape Town International Airport (CPT) in Cape Town are currently experiencing delays at the Border Management Authority's immigration processing points due to extended queues. ACSA has therefore deployed additional personel to assist with passenger movement and is working to expedite the processing procedures. Every year since 1977, the worldwide community of museums is celebrating International Museum Day (IMD) around or on 18 May. This year’s theme is "Museums, Education, and Research", focusing on the importance of museum collections and exhibitions in knowledge production and learning experiences. To commemorate the global event, Iziko Museums of South Africa is offering free entry to selected Iziko Museum sites in Cape Town on 18 May 2024. The Iziko Planetarium and Digital Dome, the Castle of Good Hope and Groot Constantia will not take part.
Iziko Museums of South Africa operates 11 national museums in Cape Town as well as collection-specific libraries, a world-class Social History Archive and the most advanced digital Planetarium and Digital Dome on the African continent.
South African National Parks (SANParks) has announced that cheetah conservation in Mountain Zebra National Park (MZNP) outside Cradock in South Africa'sEastern Cape got a welcomed boost. A new cheetah collar was donated to the National Park, which was fitted to one of the MZNP's resident females. The collar fitted previously was about to reach the end of its life span. Mountain Zebra National Park is currently home to eight cheetahs. Of these, four are collared. The National Park is the only one in South Africa offering a cheetah tracking activity, and these cheetahs are the ones which are sought out by activity guides through the use of a VHF (very high frequency) telemetry device. If guests are lucky enough, they could get to within 40 metres of one or more cheetah in their natural habitat. They also help MZNP's Management gather ecological data for research purposes which help in the management of the species. Cheetahs were reintroduced to Mountain Zebra National Park in 2007 after being absent from the plains of the Karoo for 130 years.
Namibia Wildlife Resorts (NWR), the state-owned enterprise mandated to run the tourism facilities within the protected areas of Namibia, has announced that the Bo Plaas Campsite in the /Ai-/Ais Richtersveld Transfrontier Park has reopened on 30 April 2024 following a temorary closure. The campsite was closed since September 2023 for security and infrastructure upgrades. These included the implementation of enhanced securiy measures and the construction of additional ablution blocks.
The Bo Plaas Campsite is located along the Orange River on the scenic Aussenkehr and Rosh Pinah Road, known to be one of the most scenic routes in Namibia. The Campsite is easily accessible from either the Ai-Ais Hotsprings Spa or the Hobas Lodge, as well as from South Africa and Botswana.

update (06 September 2024):South African National Parks (SANParks) has announced that the revamping of the old chalets at Nossob Rest Camp at Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park is going well and according to schedule. update (???): The management of Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park. has announced that the upgrading of the old chalets at Nossob Rest Camp commenced on 29 April 2024. The project is expected to take approximately four months.
Nossob Rest Camp
is situated within the dry riverbed of the Nossob. The camp is
surrounded by tree savannah and is famous for spectacular predator
sightings. Nossob Rest Camp has a reception, swimming pool, predator information
centre, shop and fuel facilities. A generator provides electricity for
16.5 hrs per day. No phone reception is available at the Rest Camp. Nossob Rest Camp is 3,5 hour drive from Twee Rivieren Rest Camp, the largest rest camp and administrative headquarters of the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park.
