South African National Parks (SANParks) has released a flooding update on the current situation in Table Mountain National Park in Cape Town. As the cold front continues to sweep across the Western Cape, all trails in Newlands Forest are temporarily closed due to unsafe trail conditions. The Overseers Cottage, Olifantsbos, Smitswinkel, and Slangkop tented camps are closed until further notice due to infrastructure damage caused by floods.
There have been multiple reports of trees and branches down, rock falls, and muddy water flowing over roadways at the following locations in Table Mountain National Park:
- Rhodes Drive (between Cecilia Forest and Constantia)
- Mudslide Silvermine Gate 1
- Cape Point overnight hiking trail (temporarily closed)
- Uprooted trees in Rhodes Memorial
- Rhodes Drive (Newlands), closed just before the Newlands traffic lights
- Newlands Avenue
- Main road between Cape Point and Simonstown.
- Plateau Road leading to Cape Point
- Olifantsbos Road (Cape of Good Hope)
- Tokai Circle (Tree down)
The management of Table Mountain National Parkis requesting park users to exercise caution during this time or avoid the mountain and wait for a drier period to access mountain hiking, horse, and bike trails. We'll keep you posted!
