Eastern Cape: Grahamstown renamed to Makhanda!

Grahamstown in South Africa's Eastern Cape, well known for largest arts festival on the African continent, the annual National Arts Festival (NAF), has its name changed. The new name of the town, which was founded in 1812 as a military outpost, is Makhanda (ka Nxele?).

Grahamstown/Makhanda is the largest town in the Makana Local Municipality, which forms part of the Sarah Baartman District Municipality. "Makhanda" (or "Makana") was a Xhosa warrior, war doctor, prophet and philosopher who, during the Xhosa Wars in South Africa, led an attack against the British garrison at Grahamstown in 1819.
