South Africa’s Blue Flag beaches and Green Coast sites for 2026/2027

South Africa has recognised 62 Blue Flag awards and 19 Green Coast sites for the 2026/2027 season, highlighting the country's efforts to maintain well-managed beaches and protect its coastal environment.

The announcement was made by the Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa (WESSA) at Grotto Beach in Hermanus on 08 October 2026, marking 25 years of the Blue Flag programme in South Africa.

Blue Flag beaches in South Africa

The Blue Flag programme recognises beaches that meet criteria covering water quality, environmental management, safety, accessibility and environmental education. For travellers, the award provides a useful indication of a beach's management standards, although swimming conditions and water quality can change during the season.

The 2026/2027 awards comprise 50 full-status beaches, 20 pilot beach sites, seven tourism boat operators and five marinas. The 20 pilot beaches participate separately from the full-status beach awards.

Three beaches have maintained their Blue Flag status throughout the programme's 25 years in South Africa: Grotto Beach in Hermanus, Humewood Beach in Gqeberha and Marina Beach on the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast.

Green Coast sites focus on conservation

The Green Coast programme complements Blue Flag by recognising coastal destinations that prioritise biodiversity, environmental education, community involvement and responsible tourism.

Four sites were recognised for five years in the programme: Nature's Valley and Kei Mouth, both of which also received Recognition of Excellence, as well as Chintsa Beach and Morgan Bay.

What travellers should know

Blue Flag and Green Coast recognition can help visitors identify destinations that place an emphasis on responsible coastal management. However, travellers should still check local swimming advisories, water quality information, lifeguard availability and access restrictions before visiting.

WESSA aims to increase the number of Blue Flag beaches in South Africa to 100 by 2030. The programme's continued expansion will depend on investment and the ability of participating destinations to meet the required standards.

Below is the list of recognised Blue Flag beaches and Green Coast sites for the 2026/2027 season.

South Africa’s Blue Flag & Green Coast Awards 2025/26 — the full list!

South Africa’s coastline just got a little bluer. On 31 October 2025 WESSA (the Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa) announced the official 2025/26 Blue Flag and Green Coast sites, celebrating 25 years of the Blue Flag programme in South Africa. This season features 50 full-status Blue Flag beaches and 20 pilot beaches (plus marinas, boats and Green Coast sites) recognised for outstanding water quality, safety, environmental management and education.

Seeing the Blue Flag flying at a beach means that municipal authorities and local partners are meeting strict international criteria for water quality and safety, providing environmental education, protecting coastal ecosystems and ensuring accessible services. If you’re planning a coastal trip this summer, Blue Flag beaches are the safest bets for clean water, lifeguards, facilities and clear environmental information.

Below you’ll find the full 2025/26 list (full-status beaches and pilot beaches) grouped by municipality. Use the list to plan a family beach day, eco-friendly holiday or photo tour of South Africa’s best managed shorelines.

Blue Flag tourism boats 2025/26
Seven South African tourism boats have been awarded Full Blue Flag status for the 2025/26 season. Operated by some of the country’s leading marine ecotourism companies, these vessels embody WESSA’s commitment to environmental education, sustainable management, safety, and responsible tourism practices.

The awarded vessels include:

  • Marine Dynamics Shark & Whale Tours (Gansbaai): Slashfin, Dreamcatcher, Whale Whisperer
  • White Shark Diving Company (Gansbaai): White Shark, Shark Bait
  • Offshore Adventures (Plettenberg Bay): Robberg Express, Oceanic

These boats provide travellers with unforgettable opportunities to experience South Africa’s rich marine life - from whales and dolphins to great white sharks - while upholding the highest environmental and safety standards.

Blue Flag marinas 2025/26
Five South African marinas retained or achieved Full Blue Flag status for 2025/26. These sites meet rigorous international criteria for water quality, environmental management, safety, amenities, and community engagement - offering sustainable, world-class experiences for local and international boaters alike.

The recognised marinas are:

  • Royal Alfred Marina (Eastern Cape)
  • Thesen Harbour Town Marina (Western Cape)
  • Thesen Islands Homeowners Marina (Western Cape)
  • V & A Waterfront Marina (Western Cape)
  • Club Mykonos Marina (Western Cape)

Each marina exemplifies how South Africa’s boating destinations are embracing eco-friendly infrastructure and community-driven stewardship to maintain clean, safe, and accessible waterfronts.

Growing the Green Coast Network
Alongside the Blue Flag programme, WESSA continues to expand its home-grown Green Coast network — a unique South African initiative that celebrates less-developed coastal areas where biodiversity conservation and nature-based tourism coexist in balance.

The network more than doubled in size this season, with 15 certified Green Coast sites recognised for outstanding environmental stewardship, education, and community participation.

Thirty-three Pilot beach sites (Western Cape: two beaches; Eastern Cape: ten beaches; KwaZulu-Natal: 21 beaches) were recognized this year for their efforts toward reaching Blue Flag status in the near future. With a national goal of 100 Blue Flag sites by 2030, all efforts are now focused on assisting these pilot sites to become fully awarded with the Blue Flag.

Blue Flag is a certification issued by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) that a beach or marina meets its stringent standards. The main criterias include standards for water quality, safety, environmental education and information, the provision of services and general environmental management criteria. Blue Flag is sought for beaches and marinas as an indication of their high environmental and quality standards. In South Africa, the first country outside Europe to be granted Blue Flag accreditation for its beaches, the Blue Flag programme is managed by WESSA (Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa) in partnership with participating coastal municipalities.
