South African low-cost airline FlySafair has been named the top performing airline for on-time performance (OTP) in the Middle East and Africa by global travel data provider OAG. The airline's overall on-time performance across its route network in 2019 was 94.40%. The big three Middle East airlines, Etihad Airways, Qatar Airways and Emirates, take the second, third and fifth top spots among Middle East and African carriers for OTP.
FlySafair currently operates domestic services to seven destinations in South Africa, namely Cape Town, Durban, East London, George, Johannesburg (OR Tambo & Lanseria) as well as Port Elizabeth.
On-time performance (OTP) is measured by comparing the actual off-block time (when aircraft pushes back) against the airline schedule time for a departing flight. The measurement is done in accordance with the IATA (International Airlines Transport Association) universal standard benchmark with considers a 15 minute deviation from the scheduled time as an on-time departure.
OAG's punctuality report 2020, named Punctuality League 2020, is based on 57.7 million flight records using full-year data from 2019 to create a ranking of the best on-time performance (OTP) for the world’s largest airlines and airports.
