South Africa: Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) reiterates hand baggage regulations at its airports!

Airports Company South Africa (ACSA), which owns and operates South Africa's nine principal airports, including O.R. Tambo International Airport (JNB) in Johannesburg, Cape Town International Airport (CPT) in Cape Town and King Shaka International Airport (DUR) in Durban, has announced that it reiterates hand baggage regulations at its airports as the festive season 2023/24 looms. These regulations aim to manage the carriage of hand baggage onto aircraft and identify passengers with non-compliant items before reaching the security checkpoint. Such passengers will be directed back to check-in counters to transfer their baggage to check-in baggage.
The hand baggage regulations are applicable to all flights operating at ACSA airports within South Africa, as well as regional and international flights departing from South Africa. They are considered essential, not only to uphold hand baggage policies but also to prioritise cabin and flight safety and are in alignment with global best practices.
According to the regulations, the hand baggage allowance is as follows:

  • Economy-class passengers: one bag plus one slimline laptop bag or handbag
  • First-class passengers: two bags plus a slimline laptop bag*
  • Bags may not exceed the total dimensions of 56cm x 36cm x 23cm
  • Weight limit per bag: 7kg
  • Passengers who exceed the hand luggage limit will be subject to the specific airline’s excess baggage rules.

Where an exception to the stated rules is granted by an airline to the passenger, the passenger will be accompanied to the security point by uniformed airline staff who shall confirm such exception to the security officer or official manning the hand baggage control point.

* Slimline laptop bag means that this bag is of a size and thickness specifically designed to carry a laptop and charger and does not include bags capable of carrying items such as documents, clothes, and other items.

South Africa: ACSA to enforce hand luggage regulations!

update (30 Jan 2015): Although other airline customers may take only 7kg on board as hand luggage, South Afircan Airways (SAA) has an exemption from South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA) which allows SAA customers to take cabin baggage weighing up to 8kg.

Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) will roll out a campaign from 02 Feb 2015 at all of its nine airports in South Africa to enforce hand luggage regulations. According to ACSA, the campaign will inform and educate passengers about the prescribed restrictions and the impact on travellers. The enforcement of this programme will be led by airlines operating at ACSA airports and supported by the airport authority.

The current allowance is:
  • One (1) bag plus one slimline laptop bag per economy class passenger
  • Two (2) bags plus slimline laptop bag per business/first class passenger
  • No bag should exceed these dimensions: 56cm + 36cm + 23cm (total dimensions of 115cm)
  • Weight limit per bag: 7kg
  • Passengers who exceed the hand baggage limits will be subject to the specific airline’s excess baggage rules
Note: The reference to a slimline laptop bag above refers to the bag size and thickness specifically designed to carry a laptop and charger, and does not include bags capable of carrying other items such as documents and clothes.

British Airways: Stricter hand luggage restrictions

As of 15 March 2010 British Airways introduced clearer hand baggage guidelines to ensure that customers choosing to take two items of baggage onboard can do so comfortably and safely.
The dimensions for the second piece of baggage must not exceed 45cm x 36cm x 20cm. This will ensure that the bag, which should be a laptop carry case, briefcase or personal handbag, can be accommodated under the seat in front.
If the second piece of hand baggage exceeds these dimensions, the customer will be asked to check one of their items of hand baggage into the aircraft hold and they may be subject to an excess baggage fee.
The dimensions of the first piece of hand baggage are not affected by this new guideline, and remain at a maximum of 56cm x 45cm x 25cm, including the handle, pockets and wheels.
Due to current restrictions, customers can only take one piece of hand baggage onboard flights to the United States when travelling in World Traveller or World Traveller Plus.
Customers travelling in First and Club World are permitted two pieces of hand baggage as standard. If the customer is an Executive Club Gold or Silver member travelling in any cabin, they are now permitted two pieces of hand baggage. More about the hand baggage allowances on BA.com.
