West Coast National Park Wildflower Season 2026: Postberg is now open

The 2026 wildflower season is now underway at West Coast National Park, one of South Africa’s most spectacular destinations for seeing the annual spring flower display. The park’s famous Postberg section opened on 01 August 2026 and will remain accessible to visitors until 30 September 2026.

For travellers planning a visit to the West Coast this August or September, this is the time of year when the usually dry-looking landscape is transformed by carpets of colourful wildflowers.

Best time to see the flowers

Weather conditions can make a significant difference to your flower-viewing experience.

The best conditions are generally found on sunny days from late morning through the afternoon. Many flowers open fully in the sunshine, making the colours much more impressive than on a cold, overcast day.

For photography, this is particularly important. If the weather is cloudy or cool, some flowers may remain closed or appear considerably less spectacular.

That said, sunny days are also likely to be the busiest, particularly during weekends and around peak flower season.

The flower season is also one of West Coast National Park's busiest periods. More than 23,000 visitors visited the park in August 2025, while Postberg recorded around 7,500 vehicle entries during the season.

If possible, visit on a weekday and arrive early to avoid the biggest crowds.

West Coast National Park wildflowers in 2026

For travellers visiting South Africa's Western Cape in August or September, West Coast National Park remains one of the country's standout seasonal attractions.

With Postberg now open, the 2026 flower season is officially underway. The display will continue to develop over the coming weeks, so visitors who arrive later in August or during September may see a different selection and concentration of flowers from those visiting at the beginning of the season.

If seeing the wildflowers is high on your itinerary, plan around sunny weather, give yourself plenty of time in West Coast National Park and, where possible, avoid the busiest weekend periods.

The flowers are a short-lived spectacle, but that is also what makes a visit to the West Coast National Park during spring so special.asonal natural displays.

If you are planning to visit during the 2026 flower season, keep the following in mind:

  • Postberg opening: 01 August 2026
  • Postberg closing: 30 September 2026
  • Best flower conditions: Sunny weather, generally from late morning to mid-afternoon
  • Peak visitor period: August and September
  • For fewer crowds: Consider a weekday visit and arrive early
  • Flower conditions: Change throughout the season depending on weather

The important thing is not to expect the entire  West Coast National Park to look like a carpet of flowers throughout the two-month season. Flowering varies by location, species and weather, and conditions can change quickly.
