South Africa: Jet fuel supply secured for O.R. Tambo International Airport (JNB) in Johannesburg amid refinery fire!

The Fuels Industry Association of South Africa (FIASA) has informed Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) that the National Petroleum Refiners of South Africa (NATREF) is implementing measures to prevent disruptions to jet fuel supply at O.R. Tambo International Airport (JNB) in Johannesburg following a refinery fire on 04 January 2025.
The damaged Crude Distillation Unit (CDU) is expected to resume operations by 21 February 2025. In the meantime, ACSA has reserves to sustain jet fuel availability at O.R. Tambo International Airport (JNB) until 20 January 2025.

To address potential shortages, the following actions are underway:

  • Scheduled Deliveries: A 17,000m³ jet fuel delivery is expected on 12 January 2025.
  • Pipeline Injection: 31,000m³ of jet fuel will be injected from Durban on 14 January, arriving by 27 January 2025.
  • Increased Rail Transport: Priority rail deliveries from Durban and Matola, Mozambique.
  • Alternative Sourcing: Procuring fuel from other airports and direct injections to NATREF.
