South Africa: Gautrain to run on new timetable from 22 March 2012
The Gautrain, the 80km mass rapid transit railway system in Gauteng linking Johannesburg, Pretoria and OR Tambo International Airport, will run on a new timetable from Thursday (22 March 2012). The new timetable is designed to provide more peak-time train capacity during weekdays and more time to change between the north-south line and the east-west line at Marlboro station. Click here (pdf) for the new timetable.
According to Gautrain spokeswoman Kelebogile Machaka, the company also implemented certain "service enhancements" including airport trains direct from Marlboro station, a simplified fare structure, reduced parking fees, discounted fares for regular users, a security hotline (0800-811-811 toll free), an sms service for real-time service updates as well as apps for smart phones.

Gautrain 101 - all about the train, the tickets, the fares and more!
The Gautrain is an 80km mass rapid transit railway system in South Africa's province Gauteng which links Johannesburg, Pretoria, and OR Tambo International Airport. To get to know the Gautrain and to familiarise its users with the system, Gautrain produced some "101" videos. The service is still new to the market and therefore probably to new for most guide books, so if your flying into OR Tambo and planning to use the Gautrain, the videos may be quite informative.

Johannesburg: Gautrain fares announced
update (01 June 2011): A new Gautrain fare structure that entails some increases and savings for commuters will be implemented from 01 June 2011. Click here for the Gautrain Fare Guide.
Commuters using the Gautrain from OR Tambo International Airport to Johannesburg, Sandton and Pretoria can expect to pay between R105 and R125 for a single trip as from July this year.
The Gautrain Management Agency on Wednesday announced the fare structure for all the routes the rapid train will be taking once it's fully operational at the beginning of July.
A person who buys a monthly ticket from the Hatfield Station in Pretoria to the Johannesburg city centre will pay R39 per trip, as opposed to the R49 payable for the once-off trip. For weekly tickets the price increases to R43 per trip.
The fare for a trip from Sandton to OR Tambo Airport increases from the current R100 to R105 as from 1 June. It will cost R115 to get to the airport from the Johannesburg city centre, while those travelling from Pretoria to the airport will pay R125.
The discount offers are applicable to 44 trips monthly and 10 trips weekly.
Gautrain is the first rapid rail system to be introduced in South Africa to alleviate traffic congestion on the roads and encourage more use of public transport.
Officials were adamant that the fee structure was based on the "principle of affordability" and were "highly competitive" as compared to other modes of public transport.
They also dismissed fears that the train will only be accessible to the elite, while the poor will continue to be restricted to other modes of transport.
"They are sufficiently price-attractive to create a substantial shift from private car use to public transport in the form of Gautrain," said Gauteng Transport MEC Ismail Vadi.
The Gautrain fees, he said, compared favourably to the cost of a single trip between Pretoria to Johannesburg city centre which cost about R61 for a 1600 engine vehicle. The costs were apparently only for fuel and tires and excluded depreciation, maintenance and parking expenses.
Once they purchase their monthly saver pass, Gautrain commuters will be required to use the ticket within seven days of purchase or risk forfeiting all the trips.
Vadi said it was expected that the majority of people will buy monthly and weekly tickets, which will lead to them getting up to 20 percent discount. The Gautrain feeder and distribution buses will cost R6 per trip for a person using the train, while ordinary users will pay R20 per trip.
The first phase of Gautrain was opened in June, days before the start of the FIFA soccer World Cup in South Africa. This included the sections between the airport and Sandton. Around 105 000 jobs are said to have been created since the inception of construction.
CEO of the Gautrain Project, Jack van der Merwe, said they were hoping to increase the train's passenger intake from the current 2.7 million to three million passengers a month. - [src.: BuaNews]

Johannesburg's Gautrain will start operating on 08 June 2010; announces fares
Gautrain will start operating on 08 June 2010 and has therefore announced their current fares for the train service linking stations at Sandton, Marlboro, Rhodesfield and the O.R. Tambo International Airport as well as bus routes from Sandton and Rhodesfield stations (map).
The system will open with two train services:
Parking at any station will cost R9.50 for the first 24hrs or part thereof as long as you also use the train. If you park and do not use the train, the parking fee is substantially increased.
Commuters will access all services by means of a contactless smart card – the Gautrain Gold Card. Cash will not be accepted for passage on the buses or trains or at the parking exit gates. The Gautrain Gold Card allows seamless transfer between Gautrain’s train, bus and parking services. Gautrain Gold Cards will be available at a once-off cost of R10 from ticket offices and ticket vending machines at all stations as well as at selected retailers. Value can then be loaded onto the cards on an as-required basis and the cards can be re-used over and over again to pay for Gautrain services. Passengers also have the opportunity of registering their Gautrain Gold Cards at a ticket office which will enable the blacklisting of a card should it be lost or stolen. Un-used value on the card can then be transferred to a new card.
The train and bus services will operate from Monday to Sunday between 05:30 to 20:30. Trains and buses will be available every 12 minutes during peak times (05:30 to 08:30 and 16:00 to 19:00), and every 20 minutes during off-peak times. On weekends the train service will be available every 30 minutes.[src.]
The system will open with two train services:
- The “Airport Service” will link Sandton to the O.R. Tambo International Airport. Airport passengers can board at any station and will pay R100 for a single train trip to the airport. All airport trains go via Sandton station.
- The “Commuter Service” links all the stations with the exception of the airport. A single train trip from Sandton to Marlboro will cost R16.50, from Sandton to Rhodesfield R21.00; and from Marlboro to Rhodesfield R18.50.
