Cape Town: The "Cape Wheel" closes for relocation! [update]

update (10 January 2023): The Cape Wheel said in the comments section of its latest instagram photo on 19 December 2022 that it will reopen in early 2023. We'll keep you posted!

The famous Cape Wheel, a giant observation wheel that offers a spectacular 360 panoramic view of Cape Town from the vibrant V&A Waterfront precinct, is set to close for relocation. It will move from its current position in front of the Victoria Wharf Shopping Centre to the new location near an open grass space known as Breakwater Park. The Cape Wheel will stop operating on 19 June 2020. It will then be dismantled and be reassembled at the new site, with additional new activities like skilled games and food and beverage outlets. The Cape Wheel will re-open in time for the start of the Cape Town summer in November 2022. We'll keep you posted!

Cape Town: The Zeitz MOCAA to reopen with an exhibition by & for Capetonians!

The Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (Zeitz MOCAA) in Cape Town, the largest museum of contemporary African art in the world, has announced its reopening date. The Museum, which is closed since 17 March 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic, is set to reopen on 22 October 2020 with an exhibition by, and for, Capetonians, titled "Home Is Where The Art Is: Art Is Where The Home Is". The open call is directed to every Capetonian who owns or has made interesting paintings, drawings, sculptures and other artworks that brought a sense of joy during the months of the global pandemic. Cape Town: Two Oceans Aquarium is set to reopen!

The Two Oceans Aquarium in Cape Town has announced that it will reopen to the public on 01 September 2020. It will be open daily between 09:30 and 18:00 on weekdays, and from 09:00 to 18:00 on weekends and public holidays. Annual members of the Two Oceans Aquarium will be able to enjoy early access from 28 August 2020 to 31 August 2020 to have the Aquarium all to themselves. The onsite restaurant, Bootlegger Coffee Company, will also be reopening and the Aquarium Shop with its marine-themed merchandise will welcome visitors back too. Two Oceans Aquarium's conference facilities have also reopened with a maximum capacity of 50 delegates per venue.



The Two Oceans Aquarium has introduced a range of health and safety measures in line with the latest Government regulations and a Covid-19 workplace-ready plan has been compiled and implemented. It will adhere to these measures as well as any others gazetted by Government so that the Two Oceans Aquarium can operate in a safe and responsible manner and in so doing protect its visitors and staff to the best of its ability.

Please note: Memberships and prepaid tickets that were purchased during the lockdown period must be activated and redeemed within 90 days of the Two Oceans Aquarium's reopening.

World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC): South Africa got its first two "Safe Travels Stamps"!

The town of Stellenbosch is the first destination and Cape Town's V&A Waterfront the first attraction in South Africa to be awarded the "Safe Travels Stamp" by the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC). The "Safe Travels Stamp" is the first ever global safety and hygiene stamp, which allows travellers to recognise destinations and businesses around the world that have adopted health and hygiene global standardised protocols.
The protocols were defined following the experience of WTTC members in dealing with the coronavirus and based on the best available medical evidence. It follows guidelines from the World Health Organisation (WHO) as well as the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC, USA) and is also backed by the World Tourism Organisation (WTO).
Stellenbosch and the V&A Waterfront join an international list of over 80 top travel destinations and over 1 200 companies around the world to be awarded "Safe Travels stamp".

Cape Town: The Museum Night returns to the V&A Waterfront!

Cape Town's Museum Night is back. On Thursday, 27 June 2019, several museums and sites at the V&A Waterfront will be open from 17:00 until 22:00, offering free admission to the public, with a number of other attractions offering half price admission. Together with the curatorial staff of the participating museums and institutions, an exciting programme of performances, walkabouts, talks, activities and more has been put together. The participating museums and institutions include:
  • Iziko Maritime Centre
  • Chavonnes Battery Museum
  • Cape Medical Museum
  • Robben Island Jetty 1 Museum
  • Nelson Mandela Gateway
  • Circa Gallery & Everard Read
  • Two Oceans Aquarium (half price)
  • Zeitz MOCAA (half price)

V&A Waterfront: The Marina Swing Bridge is getting an upgrade! [update]

update (12 July 2019): Cape Town Executive Mayor Dan Plato has officially opened the new R20 million swing bridge at V&A Waterfront, which replaces the previous pedestrian walkway connecting the Pierhead Precinct with the Clock Tower Precinct. 

update (20 May 2019): The V&A Waterfront has announced that the Marina Swing Bridge (connecting you to the Clock Tower / Silo District) will be out of operation from 20 May 2019 to 17 June 2019, as a new one is getting installed!

update (05 March 2019): The Marina Swing Bridge will again be out of operation when the new bridge is getting installed (29 March - 17 April 2019). The completion date for construction is expected to be 30 April 2019.

The pedestrian Marina Swing Bridge, which connects the Clock Tower / Silo District with the rest of the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town, is getting an upgrade. The new bridge will be wider, allowing more people to safely pass through. However, it will mean that the bridge will be out of operation from 25 February 2019 to 01 March 2019.
To travel across the two areas, a MyCiTi bus shuttle service will operate between the Bascule Bridge (near the Cape Grace Hotel) and Silo Square. (near the Zeitz MOCAA). The shuttle is free and will run approximately every six minutes between 5:30 and 23:30pm.

Cape Town: The "Cape Town Big 6" released a new image video!

The Cape Town Big 6, the official marketing collaboration of six iconic tourism destinations in and around Cape Town, has released a new image video. The short video highlights the Big 6, namely the Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden, Cape Point, Groot Constantia, Table Mountain Cableway, V&A Waterfront and Robben Island, and invites the viewer to experience Cape Town and its surroundings. Cape Town's Museum Night is back. On Thursday, 27 September 2018, several museums and sites at the V&A Waterfront will be open from 17:00 until 22:00, offering free admission to the public, with a number of other attractions offering half price admission. The museum exhibitions are supported by an exciting programme of performances and walkabouts. You don't require tickets for Museum Night. Just arrive at the V&A Waterfront, decide on where you would like to start, and use the printed programmes available to find your way around from there. The programme of the upcoming Museum Night will be announced soon. We'll keep you posted!

Cape Town: Zeitz MOCAA to increase ticket prices!

Africa's largest museum of contemporary African art, the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa ("Zeitz MOCAA") in Cape Town, is set to increase ticket prices. Effective 01 September 2018, the new admission prices will be the following:
  • Single day admission (for adults) = R190
  • Annual (general) Membership = R270
  • Pensioners discounted annual membership = R195
  • Children under the age of 18 will still enjoy free admission all year round, and #AfricaWednesday remains free for African citizens every Wednesday, between 10:00 and 13:00
The Zeitz MOCAA, located in the V&A Waterfront, was recently named of one of Time Magazine's "World's Greatest Places". The museum building was constructed from the conversion of the 57m tall historic Grain Silo. The 9,500m² complex consists of nine floors with 6 000 m² dedicated to gallery spaces and 3 500 m² to site specific exhibition spaces. The Zeitz MOCAA was opened in September 2017.

Cape Town: Museum Night returns to the V&A Waterfront in October 2017!

The second edition of the Museum Night V&A Waterfront for 2017 will take place at Cape Town's V&A Waterfront on 25 October 2017. The museums at the V&A Waterfront, including the much-anticipated Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (MOCAA), will be open from 17:00 until 22:00.

The museum exhibitions are supported by an exciting programme of artistic performances and walkabouts. More information on the programme will be made available in the lead up to the event. Cape Town: Museum Night returns to the V&A Waterfront!

The Museum Night returns to Cape Town's V&A Waterfront with two editions in 2017. The first event will take place on 28 June 2017; the second Museum Night will follow later in the year. The museums at the V&A Waterfront will be open from 17:00 until 22:00. Most museum sites offer free admission to the public, with the Two Oceans Aquarium offering half price tickets on the night.


 

The participating museums include Chavonnes Battery Museum, Robben Island Jetty Museum, Iziko Maritime Centre, and the Springbok Experience Rugby Museum,
amongst other sites. The Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (MOCAA), which opens to the public in September 2017, will host a programme outside the museum building. More information will be made available closer to the event - we'll keep you posted!
