Cathay Pacific to boost Hong Kong <> Johannesburg flights to daily service from July 2025!

Cathay Pacific, the flag carrier of Hong Kong, is set to increase flight frequencies between Hong Kong International Airport (HKG) in Hong Kong and OR Tambo International Airport (JNB) in Johannesburg, South Africa. Starting 01 July 2025, the airline will expand its current schedule from five weekly flights to daily service, offering travelers more flexibility and convenience on this long-haul route.
The route will continue to be served by the Airbus A350-900, featuring a three-class configuration: Business Class, Premium Economy, and Economy Class. Business Class passengers will enjoy fully lie-flat seats, ensuring maximum comfort on the intercontinental journey.
Through its hub in Hong Kong, Cathay Pacific offers seamless connections to major destinations across Asia and Australasia, including mainland China, Japan, South Korea, Thailand, Australia, and New Zealand.
This increased frequency underscores Cathay Pacific’s commitment to the African market and provides enhanced connectivity between Southern Africa and the Asia-Pacific region.

South Africa: Three international airlines are set to increase flights!

Three international airlines, namely Cathay Pacific (Hong Kong), TAAG Angola Airways (Angola) and Ethiopian Airways (Ethiopia) are planning to increase operations to South Africa. According to South African Government Gazette Vol. 696, No. 48831 (19 June 2023), the Department of Transport has granted applications by the airlines to boost the number of weekly flights to and from OR Tambo International Airport (JNB) in Johannesburg, Cape Town International Airport (CPT) in Cape Town, and King Shaka International Airport (DUR) in Durban.

Cathay Pacific (11 return flights per week):

  • Hong Kong International Airport (HKG) in Hong Kong <> OR Tambo International Airport (JNB) in Johannesburg
    • daily (7) flights per week
  • Hong Kong International Airport (HKG) in Hong Kong <> Cape Town International Airport (CPT) in Cape Town
    • 3 flights per week on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays
  • Hong Kong International Airport (HKG) in Hong Kong <> King Shaka International Airport (DUR) in Durban
    • 1 flight per week on Saturdays 

Cathay Pacific will resume flights to South Africa on 02 August 2023 and will initially operate three weekly flights between Hong Kong International Airport (HKG) in Hong Kong and OR Tambo International Airport (JNB) Johannesburg.

TAAG Angola Airlines (23 return flights per week):

  • Quatro de Fevereiro International Airport (LAD) in Luanda <> King Shaka International Airport (DUR) in Durban
    • 3 flights per week
  • Quatro de Fevereiro International Airport (LAD) in Luanda <> OR Tambo International Airport (JNB) in Johannesburg
    • 13 flights per week
  • Quatro de Fevereiro International Airport (LAD) in Luanda <> Cape Town International Airport (CPT) in Cape Town
    • 7 flights per week

Ethiopian Airways (35 return flights per week):

  • Bole International Airport (ADD) in Addis Ababa <> OR Tambo International Airport (JNB) in Johannesburg
    • 21 flights per week
  • Bole International Airport (ADD) in Addis Ababa <> Cape Town International Airport (CPT) in Cape Town
    • 14 flights per week

Hong Kong: Cathay Pacific to return to South Africa!

The flag carrier of Hong Kong, Cathay Pacific, is set to return to South Africa. The airline has announced that it will resume direct flights between Hong Kong International Airport (HKG) in Hong Kong and OR Tambo International Airport (JNB) Johannesburg on 01 02 August 2023. Cathay Pacific will operate three weekly flights on Tuesdays, Fridays and Sundays. The flights will be on board an Airbus A350-900 with 280 seats in three classes - business class (38 seats), premium economy class (28 seats) and economy class (214 seats).
Cathay Pacific stopped operating flights to South Africa in November 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Cathay Pacific to reintroduce its seasonal service between Hong Kong <> Cape Town!

The flag carrier of Hong Kong, Cathay Pacific, is set to reintroduce its seasonal nonstop service between Hong Kong International Airport (HKG) in Hong Kong and Cape Town International Airport (CPT) in Cape Town. The three-times-weekly service, from November 2019 to February 2020, will complement Cathay Pacific's existing daily non-stop return flights to OR Tambo International Airport (JNB) in Johannesburg and will be operated by state-of-the-art Airbus A350-900 aircraft. Cathay Pacific will operate its return flights to Cape Town on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

Cathay Pacific to launch non-stop flights between Hong Kong <> Cape Town!

update (23 February 2018): According to aviation specialists RoutesOnline, Cathay Pacific's Hong Kong <> Cape Town service will be on a seasonal basis (13 November 2018 - 18 February 2019).

According to various news reports, the flag carrier of Hong Kong, Cathay Pacific, is set to announce non-stop flights between Hong Kong International Airport (HKG) in Hong Kong and Cape Town International Airport (CPT) in Cape Town. The airline is planning to introduce a year-round service later this year. The flights to Hong Kong will be Cape Town's first non-stop service to Asia in more than six years. For now, no mainland Chinese carrier flies to the South African city. The flights between Hong Kong and Cape Town are expected to take about 14 hours. Singapore Airlines – the only Asian airline serving Cape Town at present – operates a 13:55 hrs flight via OR Tambo International Airport (JNB) Johannesburg.
